  1. Past hour
  2. I return to a topic that was discussed here some time ago. I visited the Vienna State Opera on Saturday to see the ballet performance of The Lady with the Camellias by John Neumeier. As the weather was very cold, all the audience came in coats or winter jackets. In front of the entrance to the auditorium, all those who did not put their coats in the cloakroom were uncompromisingly detained by the auditorium staff and sent to the dressing room. No one was allowed to enter the auditorium wearing a coat. It should be noted that there is no charge for leaving clothes in the cloakroom, only voluntary. I really liked this procedure.
  3. I'm going to the cinema screening. Can anyone tell me at roughly what time I will find the "full" cast on line, i.e. other than just the principals ,Queen, Benno, Von Rothbart and Siegfried's sisters. I'd like to know as I have to drive some way to pick up a friend first so shan't be able to look at the last minute.
  4. The first installment must be paid by April 25th, they will probably wait to have confirmation from all the accepted students, then they will open the waiting lists. My daughter suffered an injury last year in May and we had to give up, even in that case they called a girl from the waiting lists
  5. Today
  6. Haha yes it is! When they are preparing their Form's contribution to the Carol Service. But after Lawrie has a theatrical attempt at conducting they (correctly) decide that her talents would be better used in a dramatic reading of Kipling's Eddi's Service
  7. I've send an email to ask if there was any news and they told me that the latest admissions will arrive by the end of the month. If we haven't received anything by then, it means that no spot became available.... 😞
  8. I won’t say where my child is training because I want as much anonymity for them as possible. They are at one of the main vocational ballet schools. They auditioned successfully for Y9. I did not want them boarding any earlier because than this. If I could have found a local alternative I would have left it until Upper School. Boarding full-time for vocational training (and this is my own personal opinion) with hindsight is not great, but….my child loved ballet ALOT. Having everything in one place has worked well for them, however it is not easy, but waaay easier than what went before with travelling and hunting down good quality training. Would your child like to board, what age are they?
  9. Any up to date information about this ballet group and trainee positions?
  10. I was wondering this too, my DS auditioned on Saturday, does anybody know how many auditions were held?
  11. Jan hello, what has your DC decided to do? Any up to date news about Catalunya. And so so true, sooo difficult for all these young people to find even a trainee program.
  12. Thank you as that’s exactly how I feel. Can I ask where your child is at for school and how they are finding it? I don’t want my child to board but equally they are finding juggling secondary school and local dance plus weekend associates too tiring so trying to work out best option, academically as well as dancing wise
  13. I know children who travel in from quite a distance, South Coast for example. My own dd has 1 hour journey door to door, shes done it for 5 years quite happily no issues, they all become very streetwise and self sufficient. There are some homestay options, but this does vary each year and cant be guaranteed, best to talk to them about how that works. Happy to answer any questions about the school.

  15. Excellent advice. As parents we do tend to get swept up in the excitement and opportunity. But being realistic about what is achievable and in our children’s best interest long term is essential. Even if that means saying no. In our experience, lower schools aren’t necessary.
  16. Hello, there does not seem to be much of a norm. For us initially my child and I got caught up in the excitement of it all, until I realised this is a marathon not a sprint, and a balanced life with all its component parts is key to a healthy happy child. I used to drive my child to vocational ballet training in London 5 days a week. 2 hrs each way. My child was Home Educated and it was absolutely exhausting for me as well as them. Exciting at first but after a while it was just too much. we managed a year and threw in the towel, it just was not sustainable for either of us long term. I found I was more exhausted than they were. I can only imagine how hard it would be with a full school day thrown in. My child is now in full time residential training, days are long and challenging but minus the travel. we found travel to associate programs at weekends RBS and Ballet Boost a breeze by comparison. They were a 2 hour journey each way. knowing what I know now, if I could have found a local school with a teacher that is up to date on their training and development in ballet teaching and could offer a non-syllabus style approach alongside the standard RAD classes; with parking and a coffee shop nearby I would throw myself and my child at it and stay there until Upper School if they hadn’t lost interest by then😁 your child might want it more than anything but we found that a healthy balance of fun, friends, school and dance makes for an all round better outcome for everyone long term 💗
  17. Dont they have a homestay program - email them. But kids do travel it just becomes not practical after a late night rehearsal. Good luck xx
  18. Interested in applying for LVS for next year but it’s about a 1-2hr train journey each way. I think that’s too tiring on top of being at school each day but wondered what the norm was.
  19. That was a really interesting discussion, thank you @Roberta
  20. I saw Momoko Hirata in Swan Lake guesting in Japan this January and she was still at the top of her game, fabulous and flawless, stunningly beautiful.

  22. I was waiting for Friday rush, as 7th didn't have availability in the area I was after when public booking opened, so I'll just be doing rush for a different date. At least that saves me the ticket return fee.

  24. Thanks FionaM for your review from Bristol, I too attended the BRB Sleeping Beauty there, opening night (Thurs) led by Miki Mizutani and Lachlan Monaghan. Bristol is not close to my home, but worth the travel for such a piece of art. I saw Mizutani and Monaghan in Salford in March and again they were simply class, class, class. I was much closer to the action than in Salford and I repeat what I said earlier in the thread, that they would grace any company and stage worldwide. As well as their technically and artistically supremacy, the closer view allowed me to see the beautiful bodily and facial expression they gave to their steps. Yes indeed Monaghan's effortless high double tours are worthy of mention, his relaxed mastery of the Act III solo, as in Salford, was just sensational. Mizutani's exquisite brilliance I can't adequately describe. The whole company performed and delivered in a manner fitting to this ballet masterpiece, and to this wonderful production. New principal Beatrice Parma danced the Fairy of Temperament/Violente in the prologue, and the Enchanted Princess Act III. I felt her confidence and clarity and it's exciting to see her rise. It's been a while since I've seen ballet in Bristol and was good to be back. I believe that since 1999, BRB has toured to Bristol only in 2016-2018 (info gleaned from this excellent forum!). Bravo again, and thanks again, to BRB, for their splendid, elevating art, and this brilliant production which is fabulous to have touring the UK.
