Room 202 - on the positive side

In another thread (Room 101 - things that complicate life) it was suggested that a new thread be started - Room 202 - for those things that make life a bit easier.

I vote for the once rare but now ubiquitous "remote."

Yes, there are too many of them.

Yes, they get lost in plain sight.

Yes, they can be an item of contention (probably the cause of a divorce or two).

Yes, the toddler wants to suck on them

The dog wants to chew a bit

The batteries die

But - I just can't imagine that we used to actually have to get up and walk over to change a channel on the TV.

How primitive life used to be!

And I really love the "mute" button.

Oh, I agree - and I'd add to that the beauty of the "pause" button should nature (or a person) call during a gripping bit of drama. Not usually necessary during Downton Abbey due to the incessant adverts, but that's a separate issue. ;-)

And the luxury of being able to Fast Forward through most everything on X Factor except the actual songs. :-D

The upside of one of my "room 101s" (bicycle riders on the prom) is the pleasure I get from taking Chunkydog for a walk.  That is a real stress buster, especially when admiring Antony Gormley's Another Place installation at the same time (aka The Iron Men on Crosby Beach).

The huge thrill of a full house and the palpable buzz before the curtain goes up.

Books!

Lincoln Cathedral. On a late November day with afternoon low winter sun beautiful and atmospheric both inside and out.

Was there yesterday.

Such a friendly Cathedral to visit.....very friendly staff ........complete access to all parts.......and just a suggestion of a possible donation (rather than the outright demand for entry to many these days)

Actually yesterday was even more beautiful but for a sad reason. Whilst sitting in the lovely wooden choristers section soaking up the atmosphere of the fading light was suddenly treated to the music of John Taverners Song for Athene which was being sung by the choir in another section of the church for the funeral of a teenage boy who attended the Minster school there.

Sounded truly beautiful and was appropriate in another way for me as I had also lit a candle for my dear friend Judith who died a couple of months ago as it would have been her 66th birthday yesterday(we are just a few days apart).

But anyway she's definitely in room 202 as we had so many real laughs together. Often the first thing we did on meeting each other again was to start laughing......and that was before anything funny had actually happened.....we knew it was just round the corner!

Even within a Room 101 there can be a Room 202.

On Friday evening after my surgery and three hrs in the intensive recovery room, my bed was wheeled back to my hospital room.  It was a private room (thank you, doctor XXX who insisted on it), on the tenth floor with a huge window overlooking the city and the ocean.  Of course, on returning to the room, I was in and out of anesthetized sleep.

The nurse told me very strongly that I was not to move (I was flat on my back in a flat bed) and especially not to lift my head in any way.   I had to remain unmoving for 9 hours or I would have a terrible headache from the anesthesia.  Nine hours would be up at 6 a.m.   I was so thirsty and lips cracked dry.

I felt a presence sometime that night - a figure who put something beside me and quickly left.

When the nurse came in some time later, I was sure it must be morning and it was the closed window shades which kept the room darkened.  To my dismay the nurse informed me it was only 1:30 am. - four and a half hours to go.   As I "awakened" more and more the hours went more slowly.

Then joy of joys, the nurse came in and said it was 6 a.m. He raised my head a few degrees and opened the window shades.  He handed me a cup of strawberry cream jelly.  It was cool, wet and delicious.  As I lay there savoring every drop, I watched the dawn break over the city, it had rained the night before (unbeknownst to me) the clouds were beautiful and the ocean shining.

And I thought - how good this strawberry stuff tastes!

And the figure in the night ??   My dear sweet daughter in law who is an RN in an adjoining hospital came over after her 12 hr shift at midnight to leave me a loving note.

A true Room 202 in the midst of a Room 101.

Our animals. Smokie is turning into a real pleasure, having been a very nervous cat for four years. She will now sit on us, purr, and ask for a fuss. She still doesn't like being picked up and I would never trust her with children but even so, it is a massive change in a cat who would scratch and bite if she was even looked at askance! Amylabrador has always been a joy, if somewhat a one man dog, and Harleypuss is a sweetheart. We had the last two from very young but Smokie was a few months old and had been kept in a hutch and was never socialised.

Sometimes I think we get Room 101 and 102 confused - we think we are in the first when really we are in the second.

So - when it comes to the micro view, my personal challenges, I ask myself - is today better than a week ago?

As for the macro view, we all live in the finest countries on earth, in all of historical time, sit in front of computers, food in the next room, discussing dance, with, for the most part access to all kinds of support unheard of only a few decades ago, ....

Forgive me - today is Thanksgiving Day in the United States of America - and I do.

City Academy!

Have been injured for the past few days......muscles going over the right hip and coming from the lower Lumbar area in severe spasm since yesterday a.m. but has been coming on with little warning spasms for a few weeks now. Anyway was hoping would clear up by the weekend but I can tell now will hang around at least another week........though seeing osteo tomorrow so hopefully will improve a bit more quickly in the next few days but not in time for their workshop on Sunday!

Anyway I rang them this afternoon and without so much as a blink of an eye they moved me over to another workshop without me losing any money or paying any penalty. Such lovely people there.....in the office....as well as the teachers!!

Thankyou along for the ride mum .....taken a while to get back to forum ...as was being forcibly separated from IPad when you posted to get out of the house to get to Waitrose to do a final shop in order to get some £25 voucher as the offer runs out today!

I'm sure these vouchers are a con as you end up it seems to me spending much more than usual......like a years supply of wine etc.....just to get a "free" voucher!

Well I won't mind if he spends the £25 on a birthday prezzie I suppose! :)

All the mundane things we take for granted until we suddenly lose them. For me this experience will stay with me for life and I will never again take for granted being able to walk to the end of the street.

Thanking all the people who have been so kind when they heard the reason behind my injury. Complete strangers have helped so much. I was walking down street a few days ago only now on one crutch when two workmen came round a corner and almost hit me, not so much physically, but by a barrage of foul language. He apologised and stopped but then 30 secs later called down the street-"I hope you get better soon miss". It came when least expected and so I guess what I am also trying to add to 202 is the capacity of the human spirit to connect with others when least expected. Random acts of kindness.

What does it say that the thread Room !01 is so much longer than this thread?

I dreamt last night that I was wanderiing around a city (I don't know which one) and couldn't find my way or anyone I knew.

What a relief to awaken safe in my bed with the warm shoulder of my husband touching mine.

These small everyday joys are really huge.

That's my fault I'm afraid, I started it!

I have decided that from now on, every time I put something into Room 101, I will also put something here too :)

Had to laugh the other day, we had a missive from dd's school -in the Spring term they are having extra science classes after school (they want everyone to take the exam a year early) and the lessons will be in...

Room 106 ;)

So we now have an education department!

Janet, hope it would't hurt too much!

For room 202, I must add YouTube to the list.

Much as I hate technology, it is simply wonderful to be able to see all historical clips of ballet, other dances, and music at my own convenience... Not to mention really old films (1930's) I always wanted to watch but couldn't.

Funny how the latest technology is serving to enjoy things past... well, I never thought I could watch Josephine Barker dance or Anna Pavlova dancing and speaking at home...
