SADLER’S WELLS SUMMER FESTIVALS PROGRAMME

Sadler’s Wells, the UK’s leading dance house returns to both Latitude Festival in Suffolk and Wilderness Festival in Oxfordshire this summer with an eclectic programme of dance.

At Latitude Sadler’s Wells once again takes to the Waterfront Stage for the 10th year to present a diverse programme including Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures, which celebrates 30 years of innovative dance this year, to the Latitude audience. An extract from Town and Country, Country is a heartfelt pastiche led by the evocative music of Edward Elgar, Noël Coward and Percy Grainger, amongst others. Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures will also lead a workshop on the Waterfront Stage, open to the Latitude audience.

Following the Grammy Award nominated success of INALA, a Zulu ballet performed with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Sadler’s Wells presents Sisters Grimm’s Voices of the Amazon, telling the tale of a water spirit from the Amazon River through contemporary ballet and capoeira, accompanied by live music by Brazilian songwriters and world-renowned percussionists, Olodum.

The line-up also includes BBC Young Dancer 2017 Finalists, providing the Latitude audience with a taste of the best of young British dance talent from the competition’s finalists; showcasing the energy of street dance, the versatility of contemporary dance, the precision of ballet and the grace of a South Asian dance.

Boy Blue Entertainment invites you to ‘The Get-Down’ at Club B. This is a specially curated event which entices you to move to house party classics, remixed with a 21st century twist. It will feature pop-up dance performance, flash mobs, crowd participation and a 90s themed party to finish. Boy Blue Entertainment is known for their compelling contemporary hip hop theatre, striving to reflect the world in flux.

Completing the Sadler’s Wells line-up is the National Youth Dance Company, with the Company’s latest production Tarantiseismic, created by 2016 – 2017 Guest Artistic Director Damien Jalet. A Sadler’s Wells commission presented by a company of 40 dancers, the piece addresses themes such as melancholia, ritual, control and abandon. Jalet’s revered choreographic style combined with the dancers’ energy and talent is set to produce a mesmerising experience that shifts the consciousness of the audience.

Over the weekend, Sadler’s Wells will also be providing workshops and classes on the Waterfront Stage, details to be confirmed.

For the second consecutive year Sadler’s Wells presents a double bill of work at Wilderness Festival in Oxfordshire, a four-day festival combining live music, contemporary arts and an array of theatre, craftsmanship and dining experiences.

For 2017, Pepa Ubera presents a new work-in-progress, The Machine of Horizontal Dreams. The performance takes inspiration from kundalini and tantra yoga practices and explores the connections between the audience and performer through sound and movement.

Ubera is a freelance dancer, deviser and choreographer who has worked with a variety of artists both in the UK and internationally, including Jose Vidal, Tom Dale, Karavan Ensemble and 30 Bird Productions. She has recently presented work at Institute of Contemporary Arts and Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre in London and Tate Modern. She performs and choreographs for Secret Cinema and with music band Bunty Looping. In 2016, Ubera curated an evening of performance entitled The Palest Lightat Sadler’s Wells’ Lilian Baylis Studio as part of its Wild Card initiative, and is currently a Sadler’s Wells Summer University artist.

Completing the double bill is a fringe highlight of Sadler’s Wells’ annual festival of hip hop dance theatre Breakin' Convention. Artistic Director Jonzi D hosts an evening of improvised theatre in hip hop's answer to "Whose Line Is It Anyway?” with Freestyle Funk Forum.

A series of skits are brought to life through the elements of hip hop including dance, beatbox, turntablism and rap. No show is ever the same, with audience participation and suggestions guiding the content. Freestyle Funk Forum was previously seen at Camp Bestival in 2015.

Breakin’ Convention is committed to celebrating, elevating and supporting hip hop dance theatre. Spearheaded by Jonzi D, the company works with the most respected, innovative and inspirational hip hop artists in the industry. Breakin’ Convention seeks to position hip hop dance alongside more historically established artforms. Breakin’ Convention is a Sadler’s Wells Project and Jonzi D is an Associate Artist.

Sadler’s Wells’ Artistic Director and Chief Executive Alistair Spalding says: “I’m delighted Sadler’s Wells will be returning to the beautiful setting of the Waterfront Stage at Latitude Festival this summer for the tenth year, and returning to Wilderness Festival for the second consecutive year. Both festivals provide us with a great platform to present dance in a completely different setting to new audiences outside of London, many of whom are seeing the art form for the first time. We look forward to inspiring them with the varied line-up we have in store for them this year and hope they will become audiences of the future too.”
