Press Release & Calendar Listing

For Immediate Release

June 9, 2017

Dance & Dancers ART PRODUCTIONS will be holding GRAND AUDITION for professional dancers and graduate students from 17 – 25 years of age, on Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th of February 2017 at the Teatre-Auditori Sant Cugat in Barcelona, Spain.

GRAND AUDITION aims to give professional dancers and graduate students the opportunity to plan their futures and to find their home company. It provides a unique opportunity for dancers to audition for multiple ballet companies at one time and in one place. D&D has invited Artistic Directors from world leading ballet companies to come together at GRAND AUDITION, where they will observe all the participants in a ballet class on the day one. Selected dancers will be asked to perform prepared variations on the second day. If a dancer meets the criteria and standards required by one of the artistic directors, he/she will be offered a place within that ballet company.

David Makhateli, former principal dancer of the Royal Ballet and Director of D&D said: “With GRAND AUDITION, we are contributing to a better and more efficient way of recruitment for ballet companies. For young dancers, GRAND AUDITION offers an exceptional opportunity to demonstrate their talent in front of several Artistic Directors for a fraction of the cost of individual auditions.”We at Grand Audition very grateful for support of our partners: Teatro-Auditori Sant Cugat, Gaynor Minden, Dinamica Ballet, Dance Europe,Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP)

Seems a very logical way to do it - like industry specific recruitment fairs I guess!

Makes you wonder if similar could be done re: school auditions. Maybe the 4 MDS schools could jointly hold several first round audition days around UK, each seeing same dancers then holding perhaps a final round at each centre then making their offers. Those with multiple offers can then select their first choice. This would surely speed up the whole process & remove some of the angst & awful wait for those on reserve lists. Also reduce the huge expense to families

attending often 2 rounds of auditions at one or more schools with several days of school for children, days off work for parents, huge travel & often accommodation costs too.

Also could mean that there perhaps be independent advisors on panels too creating a more fairer feeling to the awarding of government funding.

Does anyone have experience of Grand Audition 2016? The website quotes that contracts were offered but doesn't expand on which companies/establishments. It was one day this year, 2 days next year. It is quite an expensive exercise (obviously cheaper than travelling to separate auditions) but I think we are a captive market - I would like to see the hard and fast data before parting with over €600 when flights and hotels are factored in. Interested in others thoughts ...

I believe there is information on their FB page about the competition.  They mentioned who was there and how many contracts were given out.  My dd had a few friends attend the audition.  One girl got to the round where she was able to perform a classical variation.  She didn't get any contracts but thought it was a good opportunity.  A girl from her school received four offers.

Okay I am confused Did you have to apply in 2015 for audition in 2017? On the website you cannot get the application form, only the terms and conditions? Or is it because it will not open on an iPad? It seems a bit daft to have to apply last year for audition next year? #tiredafteralongandbusyday!

You need to think about it from their point of view: they need to hire a venue, bring together Artistic Directors, advertise, administer the event, follow up the event.

Recruiting employees is a large business cost. If it's done in-house, those costs are absorbed by the organisation and its current employees (I'm thinking of evening shortlisting sessions in my department, weekends spent reading 60 job applications etc etc). If the audition ("interview") is held centrally, for several employing organisations, then those costs can't be absorbed by an organisation.

I'd estimate that attending this one audition would be very much more cost-efficient for dancers 'on the market' than travelling to each of the companies individually.

I was just wondering for the future . . DD hasn't got past the trying to get accepted for Upper School yet never mind a company.

315 euros is quite a lot though plus travel and hotels plus professional video ,which I presume you would need regardless .

The cost never seems to let up whatever the stage the dancer is at .

10 companies, who are actively looking for dancers all under one roof. One hotel, one flight, one weekend. It's very hard to even get to know where and when auditions are being held, this is fantastic. It would be increadibly costly to travel to all these 10 companies and stay over, not to mention the time out for the dancer. We want our dancers to be paid a decent wage and be able to make a proper living, these ex dancers are finding a way of helping dancers find work and also maintaining their own livelihood.

There are a really good set of facebook posts by Graham Watts that have video of the various sections and also the results.

22 dancers out of 165 who started the process were called for discussions with Directors - although that doesn't mean they definitely got a contract. Only 1 UK dancer got through. Congratulations Eloise Hazlewood.

Here's the link to his facebook page. Scroll down for all the different posts. Edited to add, there is also a Grand Audition facebook page

The final list of company directors present is as follows:

Filip Barankiewicz (Czech National Ballet)

Kenneth Greve (Finnish National Ballet)
Charles Jude (Ballet de L'Opera Bordeaux)
Ingrid Lorentzen (Norwegian National Ballet)
Kaloyan Boyadjiev (Norwegian National Ballet II)
Michael Messeser (Mikhailovsky Ballet)
Gennadi Nedvigen (Atlanta Ballet)
Aida Orillac (on behalf of Ballet Nacional de Panama)
Ruta Butviliene (Lithuanian National Ballet)

Graham Watts has written a detailed report "Making dreams come true" which is published in the most recent edition (April) of Dancing Times. It's very interesting as he interviewed both artistic directors and candidates and also analysed candidate characteristics and nationalities.
