Tempted by Dawson in Toulouse and excited about Sinfonietta, Firebird and Scarlett in Nice. I can't find much about Scarlett's Vespertine on the web, has anyone seen it and/ or any reviews of it?

I've always thought Stendhal's Scarlet and Black would make a good ballet, and that it should be choreographed to Berlioz, most likely the Symphonie Fantastique. And lo! apparently Uwe Scholz thought the same thing! Berlioz, anyway, not specified which work but I'd lay money on Symphonie Fantastique. I would love to see this. (Ballet du Rhin's full-length).

I've just found information on the chosen music in a file by that has been produced the "Young audiences department" at  the Opera du Rhin http://www.operanationaldurhin.eu/medias/File/DPeda16-17/DP_LeRougeetleNoir_OnR.pdf?PHPSESSID=620e2262b29935e870b17bd3d8ab329c. So no Symphonie Fantastique for Scarlet and Black, and instead a number of extracts from other pieces (Scholz did however use Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique for another ballet, bearing the name of the symphony).

The said department produces such a file for all performances, respect! It provides a summary of the ballet and background information on the book and its author, neoclassical dance, various biographies, and recommendations for further study for teachers.

I'd been thinking about reading the book and then realised that it has more than 600 pages, maybe I'll just go with the study guide. :)

You should totally read the book. It's a fantastic book! Maybe my favourite novel.

The Ballet de l'Opera National du Rhin will perform Uwe Scholz's ballet "The Creation" (-> Haydn's oratorio) in Biarritz on 11 September as part of a dance festival "le temps d'aimer la danse". Scholz choreographed this ballet for Zuerich Ballet in 1985.

The full festival programme here http://letempsdaimer.com/compagnie/ - most other content is contemporary.

This is a small clip from "Rouge et noir", I guess it must be from Leipzig, where Uwe Scholz became director after he left Zurich.

Read the book over the summer, watched the video (is this when Julien leaves the seminary and arrives at the La Mole household?), got the ticket. Thank you, both, for pointing me to this.

I look forward to seeing how Scholz condensed the 600+ pages into a little more than 2 hours, and how the tumultuous relationships between Julien and Mme Rênal and Julien and Mathilde are translated into PDD :)

Well, I'll be seeing Khan's Giselle this Saturday and the new piece by Crystal Pite on 9 Oct, so I'll be able to comment after that.

I like those rippling effects/ waves that are shown in the teaser and in various videos on the web. Can't wait :)

Charles Jude, the Director of Ballet at the Opera de Bordeaux since 1996 will retire at the end of this season. The Opera plans to acquire his choreographies so they can be performed also in the future. It had suspended him in February 2017, referring to “lack of cooperation”, something that Charles Jude rejected in an interview. The announcement that Jude will retire is described as “amicable settlement” of the matter. One of the articles that I’ve read on the web says the agreement means that Jude is not suspended any more.

Potential budget cuts for the ballet company and their presumed impact have been discussed in recent months. The dancers said it would prevent the company from performing large-scale classical works, they planned to go on strike for one performance in December (ultimately they didn’t), after the end of the curtain calls of a performance in December, they highlighted to the audience the impact the cuts would have (dancers affected left the stage so the audience could see the gaps that the cuts would create), a dancer has lodged a petition in support of the company, etc. The Opera rejected the claims regarding the nature/ impact of the cuts (see the press release about the suspension).

The press release announcing the retirement refers to the forthcoming agreement for the next five years of the Opera and that it will allow to reconfirm its commitment to the ballet company (with a new person then for the ballet). It does not, however, comment on any budget-related aspects.
