  1. Clearly a thread doomed to have little life in it, but still: This Saturday, at 7.30 on BBC4, a repeat of "Nureyev: From Russia with Love" http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0080kjw Oh, and if anyone was hoping for some more performances on terrestrial TV, it emerged from the Metamorphosis insight evening this evening that Sky Arts have grabbed that as well. EDIT: General rule of thumb: if it can be received using Freeview only, it goes here!
  2. Oh I am so glad a separate thread has been started for this. I watched the first episode last night, and thought it came out as fresh as a daisy. Fonteyn was a terrific presenter, allowing sufficient time on each segment without dwelling on the subject for too long or becoming too technical. I'd seen it before, but my partner hadn't and was slightly reluctant. He enjoys ballet, but thought it might be a bit above his head. Not a bit of it, he was as enthralled as I was. I kept fairly quiet because I was interested to hear his reaction to the various pieces. He thought Makarova was a very beautiful dancer, "but why is it so slow? Isn't it normally danced bit faster?" I wasn't actually timing it, but it felt slow to me too. Although I could enjoy her wonderful technique and exquisite arms, and the whole piece was very beautiful, for me it lacked drama. Sacrilege to say so, I suppose! His reaction to the Le Corsaire, which he was seeing for the first time with Fonteyn and Nureyev? "Oh my, now I can appreciate what all the fuss was about at the time." We both thoroughly enjoyed the Fascinating Rhythm piece, and he said it was "much better than almost all that new stuff I have seen at Covent Garden." Can I add that to the Wish List thread please? And finally the Sleeping Beauty pdd. "Wow. She was amazing, really exciting." For me, it was a joy to see Seymour in such a pure classical role. As there are so few clips available of her dancing anything, I could appreciate what a unique talent she was and why MacMillan adored her so much. Observing all the wonderful ballerinas - Fonteyn, Seymour, Makarova - I relished their style. Their arms and hands were glorious, and their feet were lovely, especially in the arabesques. No crooked foot on the end of the leg. Their extensions were beautiful, and there was nothing wrong with the height of their legs. And above all, the speed shown, especially by Seymour. It was so thrilling I could watch it over and over.
  3. Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty only dance I could find on BBC Christmas BBC Christmas 2023 TV and iPlayer line-up brings the festive spirit to the UK
  4. That's wonderful! I'd thought that for various reasons it couldn't be shown again. I'll definitely record it!
  5. When does Sky Arts move onto Freeview? I know it's this month, but does anyone know the actual date?
  6. I was checking a cinema booking and saw the film of Carlos Acosta's Don Q is showing on 26 October at 8pm. Sounds good, does anyone know the casting?
  7. As TV channels are starting to announce their Christmas schedules I thought I'd start a new thread though I don't anticipate it will be a very long one, certainly in terms of actual ballet on TV over Christmas or the New Year. In this weeks Radio Times the BBC say they are showing Matthew Bourne's Nutcracker sometime on BBC2. Filmed live at Sadlers Wells in Jan 2022 and directed for the screen by Ross McGibbon. Then there is Coppelia:- A new adaptation of Coppélia this winter combines enchanting animation and live action dance in a modern take on the much-loved ballet. With a world-class cast including Michaela DePrince, Daniel Camargo, Vito Mazzeo, Dame Darcey Bussell and Irek Mukhamedov, this new adaptation sees Dr. Coppelius (Mazzeo) as a cosmetic surgeon, whose lure of superficial beauty poisons the town. Swan (DePrince) must uncover the truth about the popular newcomer who puts her community and the life of her beloved Franz (Daniel Camargo) in danger. Choreographed by Ted Brandsen and featuring an original score composed by Maurizio Malagnini, performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra. Mmmmmmmmmmm Lets hope there is more to come otherwise it will be out with the dvds.
  8. Having just read the Daily Telegraph's long obituary for Bob Lockyer, the televised-dance producer (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/obituaries/2022/06/17/bob-lockyer-producer-whose-films-established-modern-dance-forefront/), it's left me very saddened, and rather depressed: Where has it all gone? Even with a supposedly arts-based BBC4 (which of course won't be in existence for much longer anyway) the thought of dance coverage - or any performance coverage - on this scale is just a pipe dream these days. Sorry to be gloomy, but I thought it was worth acknowledging
  9. I often wonder when McGregor ever doesn't have a "busy few months"! Talking of which, he was on BBC Radio 3's In Tune this evening - somewhere around 30 minutes in, I'd guess, although I missed the start of it. And I actually saw trailers for this programme several times yesterday. It's amazing what happens when you put dance on BBC1, isn't it?
  10. Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere. I'd be surprised if it has been missed. Seems to be the ballet season announced for this year that was subsequently cancelled. Like before, not much I'm personally interested in apart from the Carlos Acosta dance/drama film I enjoyed at the cinema. https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/2021/dance-season-2022
  11. Channel 5 Tue 21 Dec 3:30pm-4:30pm (1 hour) A Nutcracker Christmas (2016) Jaded former ballerina Lily is forced to come to terms with the life - and love - she left behind when her niece Sadie, herself a ballet prodigy, is asked to take the starring role in The Philadelphia Ballet's production of Tchaikovsky's festive favourite The Nutcracker. 12. "Too busy for the ballet? Let it come to you." This, from to day's Times: https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/too-busy-for-the-ballet-let-it-come-to-you-kwxdv07nw?shareToken=fadc62986105c42dc2e9e614c5486905
  13. I try to fast forward through the Sky Arts channels from time to time to set Sky+ for any upcoming ballet, but I inevitably miss out from time to time! I've just missed all but the last 2 minutes of 'Bolero'. I was just wondering if it might be a good idea to warn eachother of anything we know that is coming up?
  14. BBC reports that there will be a Royal Ballet ‘all star gala’ shown on BBC4 over the Christmas period. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-55042114

  16. This would seem to be a marvellous opportunity for the BBC to re-broadcast some of the vast amount of dance-related material that we know is in their vaults but which isn't available elsewhere. I'm sure this forum could provide a helpful list - starting for me with Darcey Bussell's farewell performance of Song of the Earth. A similar initiative in other performing arts genres would be equally welcome - in opera for example - again for me starting with Birtwistle's Gawain! And Radio 3 - Edward Downes' almost complete performance of Rienzi on the BBC in 1976 please? Other genres: Theatre - Restoration and 18th Century Comedy perhaps?
  17. If people watched Mayerling or recorded it this is the cast list for it. There is a a link to download the full programme (in different languages including English) at the bottom. https://www.roh.org.uk/showings/mayerling-live-2018
  18. Confined to bed with some virus I have v much enjoyed watching The Snow Queen- it has some lovely sets and costumes, very good use of music, and an engrossing spectacle. I especially liked the market scene, the bandit camp ( reminiscent of Two Pigeons!), the wolves ( reminiscent of M Bourne's Swans!) and the strong female roles, particularly well danced I thought by the Snow Queen herself. This would be a great Christmas outing. I don't think they should have had the knife threat moments though. Has anyone else seen it?
  19. Putting this together from a variety of sources and contributors (to whom thanks very much, particularly RMM1 and Janite) just so we have everything more or less in one place. Apologies that some of the showings are now past, but people may be able to catch up with them on BBC iPlayer at least. Northern Ballet's Victoria has already been on BBC 4 https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000cdzp A repeat of last year’s interesting Radio 3 programme about The Nutcracker was transmitted last week and is now online: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0001ss8 (discussion thread here: Also past already: ‘Nutcracker’ was Radio 3’s Building a Library on Saturday 21 December 9:30 am. (Janite has put a whole load of dance-related repeats here: Matthew Bourne has already been on Private Passions on Radio 3 (22nd December); Darcey Bussell is on on 29 December. A Royal Ballet Nutcracker was on Sky Arts at 8 am this morning - not sure which one. May well be repeated at 6 am on Boxing Day (primetime viewing for ballet again, eh?) Billy Elliot The Musical (scraping the barrel a bit) is just about to start on Pick (Freeview channel 11) as I write. A repeat of Dancing the Nutcracker: Inside the Royal Ballet is on BBC Two on Christmas Day at 12 noon. Derek Jacobi narrates The Nutcracker at 5 pm on Christmas Day on Classic FM. (For opera lovers, there's Glyndebourne's Magic Flute on BBC4 Christmas Day, 7 pm) Essential Royal Ballet is on BBC Four on 29th December at 7pm. Described as Katie Derham introduces a spectacular selection of highlights from an incredible past decade at the Royal Ballet. Snow Queen by Scottish Ballet is on BBC Scotland on 24th and 28th December at 7.30pm (or possibly 8.15 pm, depending on sources). Also on BBC4 on Sunday 5th Jan at 7.30pm The filmed Romeo & Juliet: Beyond Words starring Francesca Hayward and William Bracewell Romeo & Juliet: Beyond Words is on BBC Two on New Years Day at 5.30pm. There's a "Cinderella" showing on Sky Arts at 6 am on 2nd January - no idea whether it's actually a ballet or not. Darcey Bussell: Looking for Margot BBC 4 10pm, Sunday 5th January 2020 ... and I realise I haven't actually finished going through the radio section of the Radio Times ... Please let me know what I've missed, and I'll add it.
  20. Has anyone been watching the Fosse/Verdon series? I started it last night and quite enjoyed it, - well, enjoyed the sequences about dancing and choreography, and the way Fosse and Verdon worked as a team. It is, like most new drama series, fairly hard to follow unless you already know a lot about the people concerned, which I do not. i wondered what more informed viewers thought.
  21. This will include BBC broadcasts during the week Sun 31 March-Sat 6 April, with a live streaming day on Fri 5 April. https://www.bbc.co.uk/events/errz3d/live/c4rp5v
  22. Prob been mentioned elsewhere, but 'Dancer' film is on BBC2 tonight 11pm https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/tv-listings/?sd=22-09-2018 23:00
  23. our very own @sophie_rebeccain a short film narrated by Ash ' Matty Barton' Palmisciano http://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/emmerdale/news/a863214/emmerdale-ash-palmisciano-matty-barton-random-acts-film/
  24. I enjoyed the Giselle documentary (good to see BBC continuing the trend from the excellent couple we had during the Christmas period). It was a tall order to cover so much ground in an hour, but I think the way the two productions were woven together alongside discussion of the origins of the ballet and the motivation for the character of Giselle worked pretty well. Tamara is such a consummate presenter; she demands your attention - just as on stage, and is particularly engaging when explaining mime (as she did so well in the previous Swan Lake documentary). It would have been good to have explored the nature of Giselle's death a little more - no discussion of potential suicide- and there was no mention of Myrtha, which would have been interesting as a contrast to Giselle's forgiveness of Albrecht which the documentary focused on in some detail. But there were a few glimpses of Micaela de Prince in the role, so that pleased me enormously. Also some very interesting interludes from Graham Sutherland about the score - he is another contributor who it would be good to see regularly in such programmes. And of course the comments from Akram Khan were stimulating. Now if only we could see a full production as an Easter Day treat !
  25. Darcey Bussell's programme on Margot Fonteyn having just finished, here's a thread to discuss that and other dance-related offerings.
