  1. The Australian Ballet has announced 11 new hires for 2024: Soloists Mia Heathcote (principal, Queensland Ballet) Victor Estévez (principal, Queensland Ballet) Davi Ramos (grand sujet, Het Nationale Ballet) Corps de ballet Laura Griffiths (joined mid-year from ENB School) Alice McArthur (John Cranko Schule, company says "from Paris Opéra Ballet" but I think that was a short-term contract only as she was a finalist in this year's external recruitment competition but not ranked top six) Plus six graduating students from Australian Ballet School: Yaru Xu, Isabella Smith, Macy Trethewey, Charlton Tough, Corey Gavan, and Jeremy Hargreaves. Leavers this year include principals Adam Bull, Amber Scott and Amy Harris, senior artists Chris Rodgers-Wilson and Dana Stephensen, plus Coco Mathieson, Karen Nanasca, Jacqueline Clark, Corey Herbert, and Lisa Craig. There may be more by the end of the year.

  3. Quite the clear-out at AusBallet this weekend. Following principal artist Adam Bull's retirement a couple of weeks ago, tonight no less than six experienced company members appear for the last time in Melbourne. Some of you may see some of them in London. Farewell to senior artist Dana Stephenson, mother of three, joint winner of the Telstra Ballet Dancer Award (TBDA) way back in 2010, with a smile that always lit the stage. Saddest of farewells to the divine senior artist Chris Rodgers-Wilson, who is embarking on a new chapter as a photographer. He won the TBDA in 2013, after RBS upper school, BRB for four years, then joining AusBallet in 2011. Beautiful dancer, lovely partner, shone to me particularly as Jack in Wheeldon's Alice, with Lauren Cuthbertson; Franz to Miwako Kubota's Swanhilda, specially in her final show; Levin in Anna Karenina who gets the most beautiful solo of the whole ballet; Camille inThe Merry Widow - so debonair; Romeo in the Cranko version; and a really touching Bottom in The Dream in 2015. Retiring just in time not to do Bottom again, in November this year! Soloist Jacqueline Clark who is an RBS upper school alumna, 2006 I think, and danced with the Royal Ballet 2009-2015 before coming "home", is another hanging up her pointe shoes. Coryphées Lisa Craig, Corey Herbert and Coco Mathieson are also leaving. I shall particularly miss Coco Mathieson in the more contemporary repertoire. Corey Herbert is getting married and embarking on new adventures with her husband. She was one of the company members who took leave to perform in the ensemble of and as a lead cover in An American in Paris on its Australian leg.
  4. Post deleted as the Press Release has arrived with Jan and will be a more complete source of info.
  5. It's that time of year when our season comes to an end and the dancers get their well-deserved summer break. What a fantastic few months, with sell-out shows of The Great Gatsby and Ugly Duckling, new work showcased in Sketches and the big announcement of Federico Bonelli's first full season. We're pleased to announce the following promotions for our dancers: Joseph Taylor will be promoted to Premier Dancer, Jonathan Hanks, Saeka Shirai and Dominique Larose to Leading Soloist and Alessandra Bramante and Harris Beattie to Coryphée. We're also excited to have Aaron Kok join the company as a Dancer, Mayuko Iwanaga and Yu Wakizuka joining as Apprentices and Itsuki Amemiya also as an Apprentice until December. Of course, it is always sad to wave goodbye to some of our much-loved dancers who have moved onto new ventures. Mackenzie Jacob now dances for Scottish Ballet, Katharine Lee for San Francisco Ballet and Sean Bates for Zurich Ballet. Gavin McCaig has retired from performing and joins the Young Dancers Academy in London as Director of Business Operations, and Wesley Branch has also left the company. The last few weeks have been spent learning new work from Benjamin Ella and Tiler Peck as well as David Nixon CBE's Beauty & the Beast. We've got a fantastic season waiting for you in the autumn, we hope you'll join us.

  7. The Royal Danish Ballet is currently dancing Balanchine's Jewels and at last night's performance Nikolaj Hubbe appeared on stage twice - after Rubies, to promote Alexander Bozinoff to Solodanser (Principal), and after Diamonds, to do the same for Emma Riis- Cofoed. She has been very obviously headed for the top ever since she joined the company in 2017, whilst Bozinoff is a bit more of a surprise - Hubbe describes him offstage as a 'still water running deep' personality and he has quietly built up quite a repertoire of leading roles. The press release claims this a first for a double onstage promotion but I'm fairly sure that Alexei Ratmansky and Thomas Lund were also promoted together, after a performance of Swan Lake (Prince and Jester respectively). But that was long ago, and at the end of this month Thomas Lund leaves his post as Director of the RDB school after 10 years. His successor is Anne Peyk. until now the director of the Tivoli Ballet School. The press release announcing her appointment describes her previous career (via Google Translate): 'Anne Holm-Jensen Peyk comes from the position as innovative artistic director of Tivoli Ballet School and also has 13 years of experience as an instructor and teacher at the Royal Ballet with strong results in organizational, talent and staff development. Her ability to act in the Danish ballet school environment is seen, among other things. through initiatives such as the establishment of the ballet competition The Danish Ballet Prize and the association for dance medical knowledge Dance Science Denmark. Anne Holm-Jensen Peyk is herself a former dancer and has a strong national and international network in the professional ballet environment as well as the ballet school environment, i.a. Ballet Chemnitz, Tivoli Ballet Theater, The Royal Ballet, American Ballet Theater, Finnish National Ballet and Hamburg Ballet.'

  10. English National Ballet Autumn 2020 Announcement English National Ballet to launch dedicated ENB at Home video-on-demand platform Emerging Dancer will be streamed live from ENB’s own production studio at London City Island A digital season of works for camera in development for Autumn 2020 Nine new commissions UK premieres of Tamara Rojo’s Raymonda and Creature by Akram Khan postponed Announcement of promotions within the Company and thanks given to those leaving Photo caption: The Emerging Dancer 2020 finalists (c) Photography by Laurent Liotardo, post production by Nik Pate English National Ballet today announces its revised plans for Autumn 2020, as the Company’s previously scheduled performances have been cancelled due to the continuing impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic. An exciting new digital season of short works for camera from choreographers including Russell Maliphant, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Yuri Possokhov, Arielle Smith and ENB Associate Choreographer Stina Quagebeur will be created, rehearsed, and performed by Company dancers in English National Ballet’s studios within COVID secure guidelines. This marks the first time Cherkaoui and Smith have created work for ENB’s main Company, and the first time Possokhov has created work for a UK Company. Shown in a series of mixed bills, these new works will be available to rent via ENB at Home, a new video-on-demand service from English National Ballet. ENB’s digital season is currently in rehearsal and will premiere in November and December 2020. Tamara Rojo, Artistic Director of English National Ballet said: “It is testament to the talent of our dancers and the spirit and reputation of our Company that we have such incredible choreographers working with us on our digital season. I’m thrilled that not only will we have new pieces by renowned choreographers to share with our audiences, but that even in these challenging times we are also continuing to support young talent too. I can’t wait to see what they create.” Following the cancellation of performances at Southbank Centre, English National Ballet will now perform and stream its 11th annual Emerging Dancer competition from its own production studio at London City Island. Celebrating the bright future of ballet and the excellence of the Company’s Artists, Emerging Dancer will see this year’s finalists Ivana Bueno, Carolyne Galvao, Miguel Angel Maidana, Victor Prigent, Emily Suzuki and William Yamada perform a classical pas de deux followed by contemporary pieces choreographed by ENB Lead Principal Jeffrey Cirio, ENB Associate Choreographer Stina Quagebeur and Mthuthuzeli November. We will also see performances by last year’s winners Julia Conway and Rhys Antoni Yeomans who will be dancing a new creation by Arielle Smith. Emerging Dancer is produced by First Soloist James Streeter as part of ENB’s new dancer development programme, Dance Leaders of the Future. The Emerging Dancer finalists are now back in the studio, being mentored by their peers and preparing to perform in front of a panel of eminent judges including Edward Watson, Kerry Nicholls and Kenneth Tindall, on 22 September. Audiences around the world will be able to pay to watch this live streamed event for a fee of £5 and for the first time, will also be invited to cast their own votes by text and select a People’s Choice winner. In all, English National Ballet will present nine new commissions this Autumn Season. The new ENB at Home on demand platform will not only host filmed performances of new works and events, but will also be a home for additional high-quality on-demand ballet content beyond the stage, such as performances including Le Corsaire and Akram Khan’s Giselle, both of which were recorded specifically for screen, and selections from the archives following the success of English National Ballet’s recent Wednesday Watch Parties. Building on the popular series of classes which ENB made available online during lockdown, the ENB at Home platform will continue to give people the opportunity to actively engage with ballet-based exercise from home with a subscription-based class programme. Opting for either a monthly or annual subscription, users will gain access to over 100 hours of material including ballet classes, yoga, and fitness sessions. The launch date for the ENB at Home digital platform will be announced shortly. English National Ballet’s planned UK premieres this Autumn of Creature by Akram Khan and the Company’s new version of Raymonda, choreographed by Tamara Rojo after Marius Petipa, have been postponed owing to the closure of venues, and the difficulty in achieving the original timeline for the creation of these two new large-scale ballets under lockdown. Creature will now have its premiere in September 2021 at Sadler’s Wells, whilst Raymonda’s premiere date is to be announced. Plans for English National Ballet’s Winter Season 2020/2021 will be confirmed in due course. With changes in government guidance related to the COVID-19 pandemic now allowing indoor performances with socially distanced audiences, English National Ballet is exploring options with partner venues. Tamara Rojo commented: “Our artform is vital to the millions of people whose lives are enriched by the performing arts. No matter how difficult the situation, I truly believe ballet can bring people together and be a part of the solution to this crisis. Whilst it is with great sadness that we have had to delay some of our planned Season, I’m so pleased that through our new digital season and ENB at Home service we have found a way to continue to create, challenge, and inspire our audiences and, we hope, go some way in boosting the morale of the country.” Patrick Harrison, Executive Director of English National Ballet continued: “Like so many of our colleagues around the country, we have experienced a devastating effect of the coronavirus crisis on our operations, losing over two-thirds of our income. The continued closure of the theatres in which we perform, cancellations of national and international tours and the ongoing uncertainty about when we may be able to return to full performance or vital commercial activity means we have to scale back our organisation to protect it for the longer term. We continue to create where we can and are investing in the areas which will be key to the post-crisis recovery. We have furloughed over 85% of our colleagues through the UK Government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and have introduced pay restraint across the organisation, whilst protecting the salaries of lower earners. I want to sincerely thank everyone in the organisation for their ongoing dedication and the sacrifices they are making during this time. ENB was successful in its application for a grant from the Arts Council of England’s Emergency Fund, which secures our survival through September. Despite this and in the face of continued uncertainty, we must reduce the scale of our activity and organisation in order to see our way through the current crisis.” English National Ballet also today announces promotions and changes within the Company. Our 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 seasons have been greatly affected by the unexpected advent of the global pandemic. Our repertoire has been reduced, and our costs must be reduced as well. The Company are delighted to acknowledge members of the company with promotions this year, but sadly say goodbye to others who following discussions have chosen to leave English National Ballet to pursue other projects. Francisco Bosch, 8th Year Artist, after 17 years with the Company Fernando Bufala, First Soloist, after 7 years with the Company Barry Drummond, First Artist, after 10 years with the Company Shevelle Dynott, 8th Year Artist, after 15 years with the Company James Forbat, First Soloist, after 15 years with the Company Daniel Kraus, Junior Soloist, after 16 years and 11 months with the Company Adela Ramirez, First Soloist, after 22 years with the Company Maria Jose Sales, 8th Year Artist, after 6 years with the Company Jia Zhang, First Artist, after 11 years with the Company Earlier this year, ENB also said goodbye to First Soloist Crystal Costa and 8th Year Artist Joshua McSherry-Gray after 12 and 11 years with the company respectively. Jane Haworth, who joined us as a dancer in 1983 and then became Character Artist and Artistic Coordinator, retired in June. Artist of the Company Maeve Nolan also leaves at the end of the current Season. Tamara Rojo said: “I want to offer heartfelt thanks to these dancers for their contribution and dedication to the Company. Their talent and artistry will be missed by all, colleagues and audiences alike. I wish them all the best for the future.” Lead Principal Jurgita Dronina, who previously split her time between ENB and National Ballet of Canada, will not return to ENB next Season. Jurgita will continue to dance in Canada. Tamara Rojo notes that “we certainly hope to work with Jurgita again in the future.” Jurgita Dronina said: “During my time with English National Ballet, I have shared some of my best performances, and been able to witness and be part of the historical change and accomplishments the Company has achieved so far. I wish English National Ballet the best possible future in these difficult times, and I am looking forward to hopefully finding a different way to continue my association with the Company when times are more certain.” ENB also announces the following promotions which have been made within the Company: Gabriele Francesco Frola has been promoted to Lead Principal. 11. Northern Ballet has issued an End of Season announcement. The dancers leaving the company have been listed but they have stated there will be no promotions due to the C-19 pandemic and new dancers cannot yet be announced. https://northernballet.com/blogs/northern-ballet/20-07-01/2020-leavers I feel so sad for the dancers who have retired having missed their valedictory performances due to the pandemic. Of course this has affected many dancers in many companies. The leavers are Hannah Bateman (retiring), Nicola Gervasi (retiring), Nina Querioz da Silva, Abigail Cockerell, Ayça Anil and Ommaira Kanga Perez. I send them all my best wishes for the future.
  12. The promotions list is out! Just seen it on Facebook. I don’t know how to put it here but many people will be pleased here. Can an admin move this please?
  13. Just seen on Twitter (from the RB) that Nehemiah Kish is retiring from the RB at the end of this season. I'm very sad about that, because I feel as if I only started to know/appreciate him recently. It says on the ROH website that he will be embarking on a course of postgraduate study in the arts and cultural policy in the autumn at Goldsmiths, University of London.
  14. Just noticed it's up on the ROH website: http://www.roh.org.uk/news/the-royal-ballet-announces-leavers-and-joiners-for-the-2018-19-season
  15. It looks as though the Company are preparing the release of information. I can see the headline on the website but no detail. I’m out with my dog so if anyone sees it before me, please feel free to post on this thread.

  21. 7 June 2013 BIRMINGHAM ROYAL BALLET ANNOUNCEMENTS Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Principal Ambra Vallo, First Soloist Victoria Marr and Artists Kristen McGarrity and Laura Davenport will leave the Company following their Giselle performances in Birmingham and Dublin 2013. The four Birmingham Royal Ballet dancers have made the decision to leave the Company in order to pursue new careers, some still connected to dance and some away from the art form. But all agree their experiences with Birmingham Royal Ballet have been invaluable in helping them find a passion for, and moving on to, a second career. Supporting dancers to achieve this, Birmingham Royal Ballet offers a number of Career Professional Development initiatives to its Company members whilst they are still dancing, put in place to make their move from dance performance as smooth as possible. BRB dancers are encouraged to engage in BRB training days that include studying Open University modules, a tailored-degree course in relationship with the University of Birmingham (allows dancers to study part-time, even during busy performing and touring periods) and teaching opportunities are offered at Elmhurst School for Dance and with the Company’s Learning department. All build on the dancers’ skills and improve career chances once they leave BRB. An ongoing Company relationship with the Dancers’ Career Development organisation also helps retiring dancers fund their next life stage post-performance. After 17 years with Birmingham Royal Ballet, the much regarded and admired Principal dancer Ambra Vallo will leave the Company at the end of the current 12/13 season. Ambra’s Giselle performance at Birmingham Hippodrome on Friday 21 June 2013 at 6.30pm will mark her final show at the Company’s home theatre in the Midlands. Ambra’s final performance with BRB will take place in Dublin during performances at the Bord Gáis Energry Theatre between 4 – 6 July 2013 (date to be announced). After five weeks studying in Thailand, during the summer of 2012, Ambra became a qualified Ashtanga Vinyasa and Rocket Yoga instructor. Ambra will leave Birmingham Royal Ballet to pursue a full-time career as a yoga instructor. Born in Naples, Ambra Vallo trained at the Royal Ballet School of Flanders. At 17 she became a Soloist with the Royal Ballet of Walloons and the Royal Ballet of Flanders. She joined English National Ballet in 1993 and was soon promoted to Senior Soloist. Ambra joined Birmingham Royal Ballet in 1996 and like all of the Company's Principals has great versatility. She excels in dramatic roles, such as Juliet, Giselle and Roxane in Cyrano, shines as the vivacious Swanilda in Coppélia and Lise in La Fille mal gardée, and the effervescent Titania in The Shakespeare Suite was created for her. Recent creations of great individuality have also included the Wild Girl in Beauty and the Beast, Pimpinella in Kim Brandstrup's Pulcinella, and the high-flying aerial in Faster. Ambra has won a number of prestigious prizes and awards, and is also much in demand as a guest artist in her native Italy. Ambra will also graduate from the University of Birmingham in July 2013 as a Master of Philosophy in Education Studies. Ambra studied part-time at University of Birmingham from 2009-12 as part of the Birmingham Royal Ballet/University of Birmingham tailored-degree course offered to Company members. Victoria Marr, First Soloist, will leave Birmingham Royal Ballet after almost 17 years to concentrate on a new business venture called Sleek Technique. Victoria dances her final role, Queen of the Wilis, during the Giselle performance at Birmingham Hippodrome on Friday 21 June 2013 at 6.30pm. Victoria Marr said: “Since joining BRB in 1996, I have never stopped feeling lucky to be able to do what I love most for a living. When I then add into the equation the lifelong friends I have made, the many countries I have travelled to and all the amazing experiences that have broadened my horizons and shaped me as a person…then I really know how fortunate I have been to dance my way through a fantastic career. All this only makes the decision to hang up my pointe shoes even harder. But with a massive desire to go out (to use an old cliché) at the top of my game and with a new business venture on the horizon, now seemed like a good time to take the plunge. I am taking all my years of experience to my new online dance fitness company Sleektechnique.com. Bringing live, interactive, online classes to women everywhere regardless of location. Whatever I have given to BRB in my time here, I have received back tenfold and with the support of all my extended BRB family I will be dancing my last performance of Giselle at the Birmingham Hippodrome June 21st”. More information about Sleek Technique can be found at www.sleektechnique.com Born in Scotland, Victoria Marr, trained at Elmhurst School for Dance and the Royal Ballet School. She joined Birmingham Royal Ballet in 1996; First Artist, 1998; Soloist 2003; First Soloist 2008. Kristen McGarrity, Artist, will leave Birmingham Royal Ballet at the end of the Giselle performances in Dublin on Saturday 6 July 2013. Kristen will train as a dance teacher and pursue her passion for choreography, music and songwriting. Kristen said: “After a very memorable eight years with BRB, I have decided to move on to new artistic challenges. I will continue to be involved in dance, returning to the Royal Ballet School to do their teachers’ training course as well as taking on various choreographic projects. I will also pursue my ever enduring love for music after having returned to the piano and started songwriting and composition during a challenging two years spent rehabilitating my knee from injury. I also intend to complete my psychology degree which I have been studying towards over the past few years whilst performing. I have met the most extraordinary, creative, talented people throughout my BRB career, and I feel honoured to have so many wonderful memories on stage and off to take with me as I embark upon this next exciting chapter”. Laura Davenport, Artist, will leave Birmingham Royal Ballet at the end of the Giselle performances in Dublin on Saturday 6 July 2013. Laura has accepted a place at University of Leeds and will study midwifery. Laura said: “My time spent at BRB has been incredibly fulfilling and, as I leave to move on to new challenges, I have only fond memories of the wonderful opportunities I've been given here and the talented, inspiring people I've been fortunate enough to work with. Alongside performing, BRB has supported and encouraged my studies with the Open University, allowing a smooth transition to the next phase. My time spent at Elmhurst School For Dance and subsequently with the company has formed a very special part of my life; I feel truly honoured to have been part of this wonderful company, brimming with such exciting work and talent”.
