  1. We are just at the very beginning of this journey and I was wondering if anyone could advise on the best age for vocational school? Year 7 seems very young but are you less likely to find a place in year 9. Cost would be a major issue for us and my initial feeling is the later the better but I don't want my daughter to miss out if the potential is there, a big if I realise
  2. Dear Friends, Some months ago I was approached by the London Review of Books to write an essay about the Royal Ballet and its schools in the wake of the tragic death of Liam Scarlett. That piece came out last month, and can be found here. In the course of researching the piece I spoke to a number of Royal Ballet dancers and present and former RBS pupils and parents. Many of them had strong feelings about the culture of the institution, and in particular about the negative and lasting effects of certain aspects of the White Lodge experience. After the piece came out I was contacted by Mandy Burrows, who is the LADO (Local Authority Designated Officer) for the Kingston and Richmond Safeguarding Children Partnership. Ms Burrows would like to hear from past and present parents and pupils of White Lodge who have experienced, witnessed, or been affected by the issues described in the LRB piece. These issues include bullying, belittling, body-shaming, undue pressurising, and other forms of behaviour (ie sexually inappropriate or abusive) damaging to children. She and her team, who liaise with the police, intend to make an assessment of current and historic issues at the school. Ms Burrows stressed that those speaking to her or her team will be doing so in complete confidence. To contact Mandy Burrows and her team call the LADO line: 0777 4332 675 email: LADO@achievingforchildren.org.uk
  3. My daughter has already started making a list for what to pack and here is what we have so far: - sliders - towel/hair towel - hair products - bun stuff ( gel, hairspray, pins, bun nets ) - washing bag (shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, moisturiser, Vaseline) - sheets for single bed - blanket - pillow - leotards - tights - phone and charger (on wish list !) anything else to add to list from past experience of SI
  4. Good morning all, Our child has recently been offered a place at WL in year 7. They want to go, but rather than go into this with eyes wide shut, we wanted to do some research and learn from the past experiences of others. Looks like we just missed the boat and a recent thread has been removed by the moderators for one reason or another. I am a member of many forums and have never in my life known for a thread to be deleted. Locked yes, but deleted? All the forum needs to do is state that any opinions shared on the forum are not of their own and are of the members. Forums are very useful source of impartial information and was hoping to learn here. Can someone give us a little flavour as to what to expect please? How did they child cope with boarding? Was the school helpful in settling them in etc? For £34k a year, the dorms are basic to say the least. The toilet in the dorms was covered in #%^* when we did a tour a few weeks and that’s when the school knew that prospective parents were coming in. Any cleaners? If the forum doesn’t allow discussion on RBS, which is shocking I’d this is the case, can someone just DM me please? Many thanks I’m advance. DD
  5. I’m interested to know if anyone knows, or can point me to where to find out, the Upper School destinations of these schools’ students, this year and maybe for the past few years? I know White Lodge has been discussed on the forum for RBS Upper School but haven’t seen where they do go, and am at a loss on where to start on the others. Apologies if there’s a thread I’ve missed. thanks!
  6. DS auditioned last week for Year 7 at White Lodge, now anxiously awaiting results, feels like a long time already! Anyone know when results likely to come out? They said around 2 weeks, but think in past years it’s been earlier, hope that’s the case!
  7. I am applying for my daughter today and wondered if anyone has any insights to share on WL summer intensives ? What is on the timetable? What to expect…
  8. My DC is yr6 and so we will soon be embarking on the whirlwind of vocational school applications and auditions which if I’m honest, I’m a bit apprehensive of the rollercoaster ride of emotions I’ve heard it to be. im still unsure whether I’d actually want my DC to attend a vocational school even though they really want to if they were lucky enough to be offered a place. So I’m looking for first hand experiences of the good , the bad and the ugly of your children’s experiences of vocational training at one of those 3 schools (feel free to DM me) so that I can go into this all with open eyes before making informed decisions as we have no experience of vocational schools, what it’s really like living away from home from 11 , the schooling , the training etc so feel a bit clueless as to what we’d really be in for if indeed we were lucky enough and decided to take this route. I’m hoping that by hearing some of your honest experiences , we may have more of an idea of whether to actually even try to go for auditions or whether to decide as a family that it’s not for us. Thanks
  9. Hi, I will be taking my daughter to audition at the Royal Ballet next month as a year eight. Does anybody have any tips for us? Thanks! : )
  10. I'm hoping for some impartial advice please? My daughter has been a JA since Year 4, and is currently in Year 6. We are working out what to do with regards to the auditions for next year. Realistically we cannot afford to send her to White Lodge, as we have two other children and a big mortgage! My question is this: if we only apply for the Mid Associates and not White Lodge - would her chances of getting a place in the MA be diminished because we haven't applied for WL? Or should we be applying for both? I'm hoping someone might be able to shed some light on the process as this is all new to me! thanks in advance
  11. I’m a year 6 ballet mum with young dancer who is about to embark on vocational school auditions on the advice of our daughters dance teachers , both local and Ja . Obviously I have a lot of reservations but my daughter is desperate to go especially to white lodge ( I realise this is unlikely)however I’d be very interested to hear from any parents with children studying there with regards to all aspects . Interested to hear experiences both good and bad so if the opportunity arises we can make an informed decision.
  12. Return to Studio course run by Didy Veldman and Emma Northmore Held at the wonderful White Lodge studios Aug 29th - Sept 6th Entire course or half course options available. 13. Hi all, My child 11 is on w1 non-res of WL Summer Intensive. Could anyone who’s child has done an Intensive at WL give me some information about what to expect. I would like to know is the day really well structured, what are the approx size of the classes, are the children supervised well in downtime. I am asking because my child has autism, RBS are aware, as my child is an associate with them. My child isn’t staying on in the evenings, they will be finishing after the last dance class of the afternoon. I am able to contact the Pastoral Care contact a few days before the course starts and make support arrangements with them should they arise. They were fabulous with my child at the WL finals, really supportive and accommodating. It would be v helpful for me to help my child prepare to know more from the parent perspective, not just the official RBS information given. 😊 i have some idea of how organised RBS are as my child has done workshops with them at Covent Garden, so am hoping for more of the same on the Intensive. TIA.
  14. Am I right in thinking all the initial auditions are done for WL now? Does anyone know how many they saw? DD was at audition yesterday and there seemed to be a fairly equal split of JA leotards, and (presumably) JAs, but that might have just been our group. I was in a bit of a daze (too early for me) - think they said we will hear by email in 2 - 3 weeks. does that sound right to people hearing last year? Good luck to all the DC, they all looked beautiful in our group. Admin: I didn't see a post for WL auditions for this year so please merge if I missed it.
  15. I've created this thread for general questions about life at Vocational School. Edited to add: this thread is intended for questions about the practical aspects of life at Vocational School, e.g. Contact with your children, boarding, food, weekend leave-outs etc. I apologise for not tagging all schools but tags are limited in number. If anyone has questions or info about life at schools not listed, please do post anyway. Please do not ask about auditions/audition procedures in this thread. Thanks, Spanner
  16. It's the annual WL summer fair and open day on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lauren Cuthbertson will be opening it. Further details at: http://www.royalballetschool.org.uk/2015/05/open-day-and-summer-fair-2/ It's always a very special day, rain or shine... but good to see that the weather forecast is currently predicting just a 10% chance of rain (down from 20% yesterday). It would would be nice to meet up with other Balletco-ers in one of the breaks.Hopefully this year they'll have an arrangement for allocating indoor seating tickets without people having to spend the breaks queuing....
  17. White Lodge will again be included in this year's Open House London. See: http://events.londonopenhouse.org/building/3214 Visitors will be able to tour the buildings and the museum, but won't be able to watch a class. Entry is free on both days from 10-1pm (according to the WL website - the Open City website says it is open until 12:30). NB The WL Museum also has free entry (and a Park and Ride service from Sheen Gate) on other dates. See: http://www.royalballetschool.org.uk/the-school/museum/visitor-information/ I haven't checked whether there are other ballet-related buildings in this year's Open city event. Yaffa
  18. Heard that there are big changes taking place at White Lodge and that the ballet principal/head of ballet has been made redundant as of yesterday and won't be replaced. Have also heard that a lot of other staff are leaving, both ballet and academic and all of the pastoral care staff as well. Feel sorry for the parents/children there at the moment who must be feeling very unsettled at the scale of these changes.
