  1. Birmingham Royal Ballet starts a lengthy run of Sir Peter Wright's handsome production of Sleeping Beauty, tonight in Southampton. Please do post any thoughts here.
  2. Just returned from a fantastic week in Amsterdam seeing three casts performing Dutch National Ballet’s Swan Lake. PRODUCTION The production is overly long 3.5 hours (including 2 intervals). I wonder if the choreographer Rudi van Dantzig used every piece Tchaikovsky wrote. Hmm. I love most ballet, so was happy to sit through the whole thing every time and of course Act 4 is the most emotional dancing and music, so not to be missed by leaving early! The storyline is thin … there is no transformation of Odette from a maiden to a swan in this version, and I missed the prince’s promise to be faithful to Odette 2 out of the 3 times 🙄. And there is no appearance of Odette at the ball to make him realise he’s been bewitched. There is also a different version of the ending to the RB/ENB/BRB endings. (How many can there be with only 3 main protagonists!) CAST - (Odette/Odile, Siegfried, Von Rothbart) 10 April: Riho Sakamoto 🇯🇵 (debut), Martin ten Kortenaar 🇨🇦, Dingkai Bai 🇨🇳 12 April: Salome Leverashvili 🇬🇪 (debut), Timothy van Poucke 🇳🇱 (debut), Giorgi Potskhishvili 🇬🇪 15 April: Anna Tsygankova 🇷🇺, Giorgi Potskhishvili 🇬🇪, Conor Walmsley 🇬🇧 All the debuts were super … Salome is exquisite and petite with a calm demeanour, Timothy has fine virtuoso technique and they had a lovely partnership. Riho’s performance was the most impressive … the surety of her quite wonderful control of her technique and the richness of her interpretation. Remarkable for a first outing. She deserves a partner who can match her. (I see why Roberto Bolle has included her in his shows … he picks the best dancers.) My main reason for travelling was to see Anna’s swan, which had been recommended to me. She is 43 now and was partnered by the young firecracker Giorgi who is 20 or more years younger than her. He has enormous height in his jumps and really quiet landings with strong upper body for difficult lifts, plus a dynamic presence. He showed subtlety as Siegfried in contrast to his menacing and stage dominating Von Rothbart. Anna and Giorgi’s chemistry together on stage was something else, in all the acts. In Act 2 for instance, … the sensuous way that he stroked her arms/wings, the way she brushed his face with hers, the closeness of their positions … they were making love in front of us. Fully impassioned. And so it continued. It’ll take me a while to come down from this high.
  3. As there is a streamed Insight this evening, and performances start next Tuesday (looking forward to that!) I thought I might start a new thread in anticipation. Link to this evening's Insight - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWR0nw2uIN0
  4. Amid all the (real) snowflakes, cold snaps, strikes and various dramas last week, English National Ballet’s annual season of Nutcracker and a winter full length ballet (Swan Lake this year) began at the London Coliseum on 15 December with debuts in the production by new soloist Lorenzo Trossello (Nephew), and debuts in lead roles by Ivana Bueno (Clara), Fernando Carratalá Coloma (Nephew), Erik Woolhouse (Nephew). Looking forward to reading forum members’ reviews, impressions and thoughts on the various performances before and after we catch our show. For those who enjoy checking out company dancer and photographer Amber Hunt’s Pointe Shoe Christmas Tree in its different colours and themes every year, this year’s theme is a green tree (of green shoes), with purple shoe ribbon swags and “bows” of purple shoes, and a silvery pointe shoe “star” on top. It reminds me of Cinderella’s ball dress in the Cinderella films, and might be a nod to their upcoming June performances of Cinderella at the Royal Albert Hall? 👠👑💃 For those who need a dose of comedy and a smile during bleak times, the company have followed their Mouse King, aka company artist William Simmons, on various “escapades” around the theatre, resulting in some funny videos on social media (you can see the Facebook ones without requiring an account). The Mouse King seems to be a dab hand at using computers and the internet! 💻😂
  5. Looking forward to hearing members’ thoughts on the newly designed BRB Nutcracker which I believe premiers this afternoon. There’s an interesting insight from the Company which includes an interview with John Mcfarlane about the redesigns and the way, over the years, the Company has ‘patched up’ the original costumes and sets. It would be lovely to have a livestream of this iconic production with a follow up dvd/blu-ray. The filmed version of this production from many years back, which features Yoshida and Mukhamedov, is very dark, and hard to get hold of on dvd . It’s well overdue for a new version. Interesting to learn from this insight that the Australian Ballet’s version (which has been filmed) has its own, unique design. https://www.brb.org.uk/stories/zoom-insights-john-macfarlane-and-elaine-garlick-talk-about-the-rebuild-of-the-nutcracker
  6. As I have had enough of clearing broken branches following the storm on Friday, I thought I might as well start a thread for the Royal Ballet's performances of Swan Lake which start next week. I am very much looking forward to my trips on 1st (Nunez and Muntagirov) and 16th March (Bracewell and Hayward) and it will be the first time I have been to Opening Night. Here are some rehearsal photos from ROH's Flickr of Cesar Corrales and Mayara Magri https://www.flickr.com/photos/royaloperahouse/albums/72177720296700854 and from 2020 with William Bracewell (who I am particularly looking forward to seeing having seen his Romeo) https://www.flickr.com/photos/royaloperahouse/albums/72177720296516106
  7. A heartfelt toi toi toi and chookas to the entire ENB company and orchestra, returning to one of my fave Nutcracker venues after having had the misfortune of having last Christmas’s performances shut down by Covid restrictions. Also a hearty “Enjoy the show!” to forum members going tonight. Please tell all, including whether they managed to check all Covid passes/lateral flow results in time, without queues stretching to Dover (haha). Please don’t forget to give extra time for travel if you are coming from outside central London, as TFL and rail companies said there are lots of cancelled services due to staff Covid and other illnesses. Curtain call photos (if you are quick enough for ENB’s speedy “blink and you miss them” curtain calls) will be especially impressive and appreciated! 😀
  8. An unexpected (given their scheduling) pleasure to have O'Sullivan/Hay dance the General Rehearsal today I didn't catch all the cast changes, can anyone confirm who danced the Fairy of the Crystal Fountain ?
  9. I know that this run still has a week to go before opening night but I thought some may enjoy reading my interview with Delia Mathews as she prepares to make her debut as Aurora alongside Brandon Lawrence. http://tothepointemagazine.wixsite.com/tothepointemagazine/single-post/2018/01/27/ToThePointe-Meets-Delia-Mathews xx
  10. Starting this thread perhaps a little early, but I've just noticed that the first night tomorrow starts at 7 PM, and hope everyone who has tickets has realized this!
  11. Well, I'm assuming that the run of the Bolshoi's Swan Lake starts at the Royal Opera House tonight, so here's your chance to discuss it in detail.
  12. I apologise for the length of this post but would be interested to hear others’ opinions. Swan Lake is my favourite ballet. Maybe the reason is similar to that of a duckling attach itself to its earliest memory, whether it be a human or a wellington boot. It was the first ballet I ever experienced (at London Festival Ballet), and since then I’ve been hooked. And the sublime music was the first LP I ever bought. But there are so many Swan Lakes! I am about to see another next Saturday – I couldn’t resist the Zakharova/Rodkin combination even though this version isn’t my favourite. It is more abstract, with minimal mime and a rather abrupt ending, but I am sure the dancing will be transcendent and it will probably be my last chance to enjoy beautiful Svetlana in the role, given that she has passed her fortieth birthday. The best version I’ve seen is by (what was then) the Kirov, in their own theatre. Their scenery was just magical with a very realistic looking lake glimmering in the moonlight. The whole production was like an exquisite poem, with dancing to match. I still have the cast list somewhere but at the time didn’t recognise any of the names even though I can read Cyrillic script. The only thing I didn’t like was the overly happy ending. I thoroughly enjoyed the Royal Ballet older versions. Liam Scarlett’s new SL has some strong points (MacFarlane’s scenery is gorgeous) but I find Benno, Siegfried’s friend, irritatingly omnipresent whilst visually resembling some kind of bellboy. (For this role I prefer the Bolshoi jester who is terrific albeit perhaps less true to the original production.) I’m not sure about the late C19th costumes; for what is a fairy story I’d prefer the era to be more ambiguous. And why is Von Rothbart so visible at court, glowering melodramatically at the Prince who must surely be his social superior? And the ending is tragic but inappropriately uses the music which signifies triumph and positivity where Tchiakovsky changes the swan theme to a major key (suited to an Apotheosis). Then there is 26-year-old Nureyev’s version in which he dared to change a great deal of the choreography, and for which he and Fonteyn got a legendary 89 curtain calls in Vienna. This I have only seen on video of course. There have been many, many other productions by different companies all over the world, and I have seen a few of these too but none remains lodged firmly in my memory. None is perfect but all are worth watching for this Tchaikovsky addict. I never tire of this ballet. Do YOU have a favourite ‘Lebedinoye Ozero’? And if so, why?
  13. A fuller cast list for tonight's opening performance is now here: https://www.roh.org.uk/events/whm7y Not complete though, as far as I can see - Rose Fairy, for example?
  14. For those of you going to the Royal Albert Hall to see BRB’s Nutcracker, don’t expect to see the same production as you will see in Birmingham. It’s a “special” version designed for the RAH. Still very lovely but quite different - just as the ENB “In the round” Swan Lake is different from the Coliseum production.
  15. I was unable to be at the London Coliseum tonight for the first night of ENB's Sleeping Beauty (Kenneth MacMillan production), but I know a lot of forum members were, so I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts! Our coverage of the previous run can be found here:
  16. Is it too early to start a Royal Ballet Nutcracker topic? I very much enjoyed the recent Insight: http://www.roh.org.uk/news/watch-live-rehearsals-for-the-nutcracker-with-the-royal-ballet-on-16-november-2017 I like seeing Christopher Saunders coaching: to me he just exudes confidence, energy and a great understanding of the detail and characterisation of the roles. And it's always such a pleasure to see dancers rehearse - Mayara, Tierney, Bea and Nicol in this Insight. There's also some cast changes: http://www.roh.org.uk/news/cast-changes-the-nutcracker-201718 Do hope dancers recover quickly from any injuries. But I think this means over the main Christmas period Anna Rose will be dancing Clara on 20, 23, 28 & 30 December and 1 & 2 January. Do hope she'll have time to enjoy the celebrations.
  17. Foteini Christofilopoulou was at the rehearsal for the Royal Ballet's 'The Sleeping Beauty', which opens at ROH on the 21st Dec. The photo call was of Sarah Lamb and Vadim Muntagirov in the Act 3 grand pdd. The performances opened now (from 21st Dec) Vadim Muntagirov, Sarah Lamb © Foteini Christofilopoulou. 18. In celebration of Peter Wright's 90th birthday, The Royal Ballet present his 'Nutcracker' for the festive season (opening late November and running through to mid January). I was at one of the dress rehearsals, featuring the debut of Francesca Hayward, as SPF. Here are a few photos: Anna Rose O'Sullivan © Dave Morgan. 19. Just got back from Swan Lake in the round and I was enchanted. I was a bit sceptical from the clips I had seen, whether I would like it or not, but I am tempted to go again. Alina was strong and beautiful, Osiel's jumps tore up the stage, but the 60 members of the corps were the stars, the patterns they made were unbelievable. There are some tickets still available, do go if you can. Even better, I was waiting for a taxi to go to Victoria to get the red eye coach home, and Irek Mukhamedov came out of the door, and he signed my pointe shoes! He was so humble, he said, 'I can't, I didn't do anything', but he kindly signed them anyway. If you do get a chance to go, go in at Door 1, they have a black and a white swan tutu on stands there, lovely to see them so close up.
  20. I wanted to open this thread to encourage comment on this run of 34 Nutcrackers. More from me about last night later.
  21. I've just been reading Alastair Macaulay's review of ABT's "new" Sleeping Beauty as revised/restored by Ratmansky: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/11/arts/dance/review-ratmanskys-the-sleeping-beauty-has-premiere-in-california.html?ref=dance&_r=1 He sounds pretty taken with it. Would love to read feedback from anyone who's been to see it.
  22. Had hoped that somebody would post up on this 'cos its a terrific show.... I went up for the premiere a couple of weekends ago and had a great time - it's a version that concentrates on Clara and the children and has no odd physiological detailing or, to my mind, strange story twists. Just great dancing in fluid choreography (by founding artistic director Peter Darrell) and glorious costumes by Lez Brotherston whose brief was to re-imagine the originals by Philip Prowse. It's proved a good move and the ending is the best of any Nutcracker I've seen - but won't spoil for you. The TodaysLinks team have been collecting a bunch of reviews - here are the links to get a feel for the new production... 23. Swan Lake run opened tonight, with Oxana Skorik as Odette/Odile, and Timur Askerov as Prince Siegfried. We had a few snippets with them (so a couple of photo opportunities, before the main rehearsal run with Yulia Stepanova and Xander Parish in the leads (they perform in the Saturday matinee) Here are a couple of sample photos from DanceTabs: Oxana Skorik & Timur Akerov (as Odette & Prince Siegfried) © Dave Morgan. 24. Just time before I go out to set up a new thread for the run of Jewels starting this evening. Please post your thoughts here.
  25. Since nobody seems to have started one yet, here's a thread for discussing the new run of RB performances of Sleeping Beauty, which starts today.
