  1. The Royal Ballet's much awaited triple bill of Kenneth MacMillan ballets at the Royal Opera House- Danses Concertantes, Different Drummer, and Requiem, opens tomorrow, so am starting this thread for reviews, thoughts, curtain call photos etc. Please note there are now further cast changes in addition to Francisco Serrano replacing Alexander Campbell (as Drum Major) in Different Drummer following Campbell's departure to take up his new Royal Academy of Dancing post. Isabella Gasparini replaces Anna Rose O'Sullivan and Mayara Magri in all performances of Danses Concertantes. Melissa Hamilton replaces Marianela Nunez in the Agnus Dei role in Requiem on 20 March, 4 April and 9 April. Isabel Lubach replaces Marianela Nunez in the Agnus Dei role in Requiem on 22 March, and replaces Melissa Hamilton in that role on 13 April. Looking forward to members' reactions, feedback and other contributions!
  2. The Casting for Swan Lake has now been issued: details for The Winter's Tale and Ashton programmes will follow in due course. {In haste to post this so I might have started a new thread unnecessarily.} Swan Lake Casting Summer 2024.pdf
  3. https://www.theguardian.com/stage/2020/aug/14/edward-watson-to-retire-as-royal-ballet-principal-dancer
  4. I don't think we have a similar thread to this which I hope will be useful for alerting people to what web relays are coming up, where and when. N.B. I have changed the title of this thread to point out that it is for notices of Insight Events and where to find the links for web streaming before (and after) the events. Wider discussion of Insights should be in Royal Ballet Insights and Rehearsals discussion.
  5. As the General Rehearsal is tomorrow afternoon and the run starts that evening, I thought I'd start the thread. I thought that Laura Morera mentioned in last week's Insight that Will Bracewell and Yasmine Naghdi would be performing in the General tomorrow. Hopefully that will be the case, as I'm not booked to see them otherwise.
  6. I should have put the word casting in the title (perhaps a Mod could do that, please?). But here is what we've been waiting for. MAIN STAGE SWAN LAKE Odette/Odile, Prince Siegfried CHOREOGRAPHY Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov ADDITIONAL CHOREOGRAPHY Liam Scarlett and Frederick Ashton Wednesday 6th March – 7.30pm Monday 1st April – 7pm Saturday 6th April – 7.30pm Marianela Nuñez, Vadim Muntagirov Thursday 7th March – 7.30pm Thursday 21st March – 7.30pm Mayara Magri, Cesar Corrales Friday 15th March – 7.30pm Thursday 28th March – 7.30pm Monday 1st April – 1pm Lauren Cuthbertson, William Bracewell Friday 12th April – 7.30pm Thursday 18th April – 7.30pm Saturday 27th April – 1pm Anna Rose O’Sullivan, Marcelino Sambé Wednesday 17th April – 7.30pm Saturday 20th April – 1pm Wednesday 24th April – 7.30pm Yasmine Naghdi, Matthew Ball Thursday 18th April – 12.30pm (Schools Matinee)* Saturday 11th May – 1pm Mariko Sasaki*, Joseph Sissens* Saturday 20th April – 7pm Monday 29th April – 7.30pm Saturday 4th May – 1pm Sarah Lamb, Ryoichi Hirano Saturday 27th April – 7pm Saturday 11th May – 7pm Francesca Hayward, William Bracewell Saturday 4th May – 7pm Thursday 9th May – 7.30pm Fumi Kaneko, Vadim Muntagirov DANSES CONCERTANTES DIFFERENT DRUMMER REQUIEM CHOREOGRAPHY Kenneth MacMillan Wednesday 20th March – 7.30pm Friday 22nd March – 7.30pm Wednesday 27th March – 7.30pm Thursday 4th April – 7.30pm Tuesday 9th April – 7.30pm Saturday 13th April – 7.30pm The Company *role debut
  7. Good to see via YouTube and am struck yet again by the sheer hard work that has to go in to creating such roles and ballets. Not sure how Ryoichi Hirano managed to talk at the end. Good also to see Melissa Hamilton. I didn't think this was the best Insight but it's certainly whetted my appetite for performances next month. But from the relay there seemed to be a number of empty seats and why has the Royal Opera House been so limp in publicising the event and relay? Perhaps Open Up has required all available resources but the Insight Programme and website changes seem rather neglected. I do hope the website will put a link to the YouTube film as soon as possible.
  8. I just had a look at the prices for the Summer Season. We already know the Swan Lake pricing (the same as it is for the Spring run and similar to that for last season's Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella) https://www.roh.org.uk/seatmap?performanceId=54784 For The Winter's Tale, however, they've gone back to the Manon pricing structure. https://www.roh.org.uk/seatmap?performanceId=54813 This is good news for those who sit on the bench seats in the stalls circle (seats in the bench seats in row C are £49 and the cheaper seats in row B are £63). It is, however, bad news for those who like to sit in the front side amphitheatre seats. These will be the same price as they were for Manon - £49 (compared to £35 for Swan Lake) Stalls Circle Standing and all Upper Slips seats are priced at £14 - again, the same pricing structure as that which was used for Manon. Here are the seating charts for the two Ashton bills: The Dream mixed: https://www.roh.org.uk/seatmap?performanceId=54801 Les Rendezvous mixed: https://www.roh.org.uk/seatmap?performanceId=54837

  10. According to the Observer the Royal Ballet will be performing a new Wayne McGregor three act ballet in the autumn; the much trailed Margaret Atwood based ballet, to be called MadAddam.

  13. The full season press release is too long to reproduce here but it is attached. ROH season.pdf
  14. EDITOR'S NOTE: This thread has been branched off from the thread discussing the retirement of Laura Morera as a Principal with the Royal Ballet - some of the posts referred to are still in that thread: Letter from Ashton to 'Mim' (Rambert) when he was with Rubinstein company. "She (ie Nijinska) gives a brilliant class, very difficult and never dull & in doing it one realises over and over again that the best system of training is obviously Ceccetti (sic) (I can't spell his name, disgrace) her arms are I should say entirely based on his and her barre is the same ..." And therin lies the basis for many Ashton ballets and the reason why his work is seen as 'difficult' by many? Twee? Symphonic Variations?
  15. In anticipation of the Royal Ballet's Autumn season which starts on Tuesday 5th October, here are some rehearsal photos to whet your appetite! William Bracewell and Fumi Kaneko certainly seem to make a lovely pairing - which is good as I am seeing them on the 9th! https://www.flickr.com/photos/royaloperahouse/albums/72157719943466395
  16. Some rehearsal pictures up - https://www.flickr.com/photos/royaloperahouse/albums/72177720303567056
  17. Watching the rehearsal and itching to comment 🫢 but hoping to read reactions after tonight’s opening show.
  18. Well sort of.... ballet-bp4-casting-2223.pdf (wordfly.com)
  19. The much anticipated new production of Sir Frederick Ashton’s Cinderella opens tonight at the Royal Opera House. All discussion and reports on the performances here please.
  20. If anyone was at the RB Class on stage today I’d be very grateful if someone could please let me know the name of the male dancer who did the amazing grand allegro (there were multiple, but the dancer I was thinking of might be Joonhyuk Jun?) Many thanks in advance.
  21. Just back from this evening’s performance of the new Pam Tanowitz double bill (which also has a film). I’m totally new to her work, but am aware she’s had success in America. Her style is definitely rooted in Merce Cunningham’s technique, but possesses a quirky humour. It took some warming up to, and some dancers seemed a bit uncomfortable in this aesthetic. That being said the cast - made up of mostly young corps de ballet dancers - threw themselves into the work as best they could. The premiere work ‘Secret Things’ has some interesting elements, but is overall rather forgettable. ‘Everybody Keeps Me’, which is being revived for the first time, resonated much more both emotionally and choreographically. If Merce had his way with a Robbins ballet; that was the impression I got from this piece. Taisuke Nakao in the latter ballet had great command in manning an unenviably long solo. There was also a short screening of the ‘Dispatch Duet’, which featured at the recent anniversary gala. Ironically, this was the strongest piece choreographically in my eyes, a shame they couldn’t bring it to the Linbury.
  22. Casting is now up (didn't want to start a new thread): https://static.roh.org.uk/for/pdfs/Ballet-BP2-casting-22-23.pdf
  23. Royal Opera House announces biggest Cinema Season ever (roh.org.uk) cinema goers can join The Royal Ballet for the opening night of Kenneth MacMillan’s Mayerling opening night of The Royal Ballet: A Diamond Celebration – including George Balanchine’s Diamonds, the Company’s first performance of For Four by Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon, and three world premieres – will be relayed live in November; in December, The Nutcracker will reach audiences across the globe, offering sweeping snowscapes, magical stagecraft and a showstopping series of dances performed in the dream-like Kingdom of Sweets. The new year kicks off with screenings of Like Water for Chocolate – a full-length ballet by Christopher Wheeldon that receives its premiere this current Season, and is inspired by Laura Esquivel’s captivating Mexican novel of the same name. The Royal Ballet’s new production of Frederick Ashton’s Cinderella, redesigned by a world-class creative team that includes set designer Tom Pye, Oscar award-winning costume designer Alexandra Byrne, lighting designer David Finn, video designer Finn Ross and magic consultant Chris Fisher (Live) live relay of The Royal Ballet’s The Sleeping Beauty; ( May)
  24. As there is a streamed Insight this evening, and performances start next Tuesday (looking forward to that!) I thought I might start a new thread in anticipation. Link to this evening's Insight - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWR0nw2uIN0
