  1. Well......truly priced out of applying for RBS now. £950 for what is 5 days of training?!!! I have read that correct haven't I? They have put their dates out for summer on their website:(
  2. News from Milda Luckute who graduated from the RBS in summer 2023 as winner of the London Ballet Circle Dame Ninette Award for best female graduate. She will be performing the Lilac Fairy role in Dresden Semperoper’s Sleeping Beauty in March! Many congratulations to her 👏 https://www.instagram.com/p/C3Vz75jo23A/?igsh=MXVnanJhY2t2bGczMg== As a side note, I see ENB’s Gareth Haw is Prince Florimund in the same performance with his previous company.
  3. I was unable to attend this fascinating gala for such a brilliant cause due (very sadly) to circumstances beyond my control. However, I (and others) would be very interested to hear what those who went thought. 😊 💃 🎶
  4. “Ballet is the foundation of dance.” This statement, and the sentiments that it embodies are incredibly detrimental to the dance world as a whole. The idea is that in order to be a successful dancer in any kind of way, one must first study and master ballet. Only then can you be treated as a “serious” dancer, worthy of notice and pay. This attitude, by its very nature, then takes the many other valid dance forms and puts them in an “other” category that is inherently viewed as “less than.” https://www.danceplug.com/article/why-ballet-is-not-the-foundation-of-all-dance-arts-and-culture This article and its thoughtful look at dance and it’s place in cultural historical contexts has just been ringing in my head after receiving a mail out from the Royal Ballet School in which it states ‘Classical ballet is the foundation of all styles of dance’. https://mail.royalballetschool.org.uk/76ZA-LW0C-0C9966EB387733C815GTJCF29A31C12A2D449D/cr.aspx
  5. DD would like to apply for RBS Summer but I get no further than the first personal details page before it asks for a confirmation login. The only one I have is from our Spring application but we were asked at the time whether we were applying for summer- which week/ boarding etc so is it just one application for both intensives or am I doing something wrong? DD had a yes for Spring so I don’t want to modify the application if it affects our Spring course bookings. We were hoping to update photos for summer too. Hopefully someone can help!
  6. Just thought I'd start a thread for anyone thinking of applying this year. The annual thread has usually been a very helpful place to ask questions or share experiences. We've just taken the pics and will be applying today. Our experience with the JA programme has been very positive and I've had 2 children participate now. After a somewhat circuitous route, we are now applying for a Y6 place, as my second DC has decided to audition again after doing Y4 and then choosing not to do Y5 due to some logistical issues! All of that to explain that we've been through this process a fair few times now, as have others on the forum, so please feel free to ask any questions!
  7. Dear Friends, Some months ago I was approached by the London Review of Books to write an essay about the Royal Ballet and its schools in the wake of the tragic death of Liam Scarlett. That piece came out last month, and can be found here. In the course of researching the piece I spoke to a number of Royal Ballet dancers and present and former RBS pupils and parents. Many of them had strong feelings about the culture of the institution, and in particular about the negative and lasting effects of certain aspects of the White Lodge experience. After the piece came out I was contacted by Mandy Burrows, who is the LADO (Local Authority Designated Officer) for the Kingston and Richmond Safeguarding Children Partnership. Ms Burrows would like to hear from past and present parents and pupils of White Lodge who have experienced, witnessed, or been affected by the issues described in the LRB piece. These issues include bullying, belittling, body-shaming, undue pressurising, and other forms of behaviour (ie sexually inappropriate or abusive) damaging to children. She and her team, who liaise with the police, intend to make an assessment of current and historic issues at the school. Ms Burrows stressed that those speaking to her or her team will be doing so in complete confidence. To contact Mandy Burrows and her team call the LADO line: 0777 4332 675 email: LADO@achievingforchildren.org.uk
  8. Hello everyone, I thought I’d start a new thread for everyone who’s child got offered a place in the Royal Ballet school Junior Associates starting September 2023! I thought it would be useful when we all first start out on this journey to discuss dates, groups, uniform, first days etc, and how they’re getting on during their first term and onwards. Congrats to everyone, it really is very exciting! 🩰
  9. https://ondemand.royalballetschool.org.uk/?_ga=2.201496145.1133413541.1666816886-1086377712.1665837072 Looks exciting.
  10. Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions for hostel or cheaper hotels/B&B that might be suitable and not far away from Covent Garden’s, maybe with other participants staying? Or does someone want to share an AirBnB? First 2weeks. Thanks 🙏 Anja
  11. Good morning all, Our child has recently been offered a place at WL in year 7. They want to go, but rather than go into this with eyes wide shut, we wanted to do some research and learn from the past experiences of others. Looks like we just missed the boat and a recent thread has been removed by the moderators for one reason or another. I am a member of many forums and have never in my life known for a thread to be deleted. Locked yes, but deleted? All the forum needs to do is state that any opinions shared on the forum are not of their own and are of the members. Forums are very useful source of impartial information and was hoping to learn here. Can someone give us a little flavour as to what to expect please? How did they child cope with boarding? Was the school helpful in settling them in etc? For £34k a year, the dorms are basic to say the least. The toilet in the dorms was covered in #%^* when we did a tour a few weeks and that’s when the school knew that prospective parents were coming in. Any cleaners? If the forum doesn’t allow discussion on RBS, which is shocking I’d this is the case, can someone just DM me please? Many thanks I’m advance. DD
  12. DS auditioned last week for Year 7 at White Lodge, now anxiously awaiting results, feels like a long time already! Anyone know when results likely to come out? They said around 2 weeks, but think in past years it’s been earlier, hope that’s the case!
  13. Latest news from RBS. Possibly not going to help with the dwindling numbers of Brits at the school. The Royal Ballet School’s partnership with Kinoshita Group The Royal Ballet School is delighted to announce an exciting new collaboration with Kinoshita Group as Principal Corporate Sponsors of The Royal Ballet School, alongside the continuation of their generous student sponsorship of our Japanese dancers. This will see the Group join our longstanding corporate partners, Imagination, in supporting our 2023 Summer Performances and lending support to our outreach programmes, joining us in our mission to widen access to classical ballet for future generations. As Principal Corporate Sponsor, Kinoshita Group will continue to work with us as we approach our Centenary in 2026, to help secure the School’s financial future and ensure we remain a world leader in classical ballet education for the next 100 years. Kinoshita Group shares our goals: to ensure no student with potential is turned away due to financial hardship; to continue to be at the forefront of ballet training, having a far-reaching impact on raising standards in our sector; and to have a positive impact on society by widening access to our art form, inspiring and influencing on a global scale. The Group have graciously supported the training of Japanese students through the School since 2016, seven of whom now dance professionally with top-flight ballet companies around the world, including The Royal Ballet and Birmingham Royal Ballet. These students would not have realised their incredible potential without Kinoshita Group’s philanthropy. Artistic Director Christopher Powney said: Founded in 1990, Kinoshita Group is best known for housing development and real estate ventures. Their mission is to provide ‘harmony between culture and a fulfilling life’. Through corporate philanthropy, they hope to hand over a prosperous and sustainable society and environment to the next generation. In light of this announcement, Kinoshita Group said:
  14. This is my DD first time doing an in person audition at RBS, age 13. Would anyone have insight into what to expect. My daughter is a vocational student and not new to RBS style having been to the summer intensive, but more curious about how many typically in a room and anything that we should take note of ahead of the day. Also, any ideas on how many move onto the final round? Do they choose students for associates from that pool only? Good luck to everyone this audition season!!
  15. Hello! A question for anyone who’s already submitted their application: Do they ask for a student’s height and weight? Just want to make sure I’ve got all the information before I start filling it out. Thank you, and good luck!
  16. My DC is yr6 and so we will soon be embarking on the whirlwind of vocational school applications and auditions which if I’m honest, I’m a bit apprehensive of the rollercoaster ride of emotions I’ve heard it to be. im still unsure whether I’d actually want my DC to attend a vocational school even though they really want to if they were lucky enough to be offered a place. So I’m looking for first hand experiences of the good , the bad and the ugly of your children’s experiences of vocational training at one of those 3 schools (feel free to DM me) so that I can go into this all with open eyes before making informed decisions as we have no experience of vocational schools, what it’s really like living away from home from 11 , the schooling , the training etc so feel a bit clueless as to what we’d really be in for if indeed we were lucky enough and decided to take this route. I’m hoping that by hearing some of your honest experiences , we may have more of an idea of whether to actually even try to go for auditions or whether to decide as a family that it’s not for us. Thanks
  17. Received this today. I guess watch this space. https://mail.royalballetschool.org.uk/76ZA-30ME-0C9966EB387733C815GTJCF29A31C12A2D449D/cr.aspx Are you a recreational ballet teacher with a minimum of 3 years’ experience, or a graduate of a Royal Ballet School teacher training programme? Do you value: Innovation Versatility and diversity The need for highly trained teachers, with pedagogical study implicit in training The need for a holistic dance training? Then we have some very exciting news for you... More to come end of January 2022 – stay tuned!
  18. The Royal Ballet School have just announced “exciting changes” to their audition process. I can see that the dates have been brought earlier than they were this year, but it just looks like they’re reverting to the pre-Covid system of in person prelims. Am I missing something?
  19. Hi, I will be taking my daughter to audition at the Royal Ballet next month as a year eight. Does anybody have any tips for us? Thanks! : )
  20. I'm hoping for some impartial advice please? My daughter has been a JA since Year 4, and is currently in Year 6. We are working out what to do with regards to the auditions for next year. Realistically we cannot afford to send her to White Lodge, as we have two other children and a big mortgage! My question is this: if we only apply for the Mid Associates and not White Lodge - would her chances of getting a place in the MA be diminished because we haven't applied for WL? Or should we be applying for both? I'm hoping someone might be able to shed some light on the process as this is all new to me! thanks in advance
  21. I’m a year 6 ballet mum with young dancer who is about to embark on vocational school auditions on the advice of our daughters dance teachers , both local and Ja . Obviously I have a lot of reservations but my daughter is desperate to go especially to white lodge ( I realise this is unlikely)however I’d be very interested to hear from any parents with children studying there with regards to all aspects . Interested to hear experiences both good and bad so if the opportunity arises we can make an informed decision.
  22. The annual matinee was on Sat 10th July. The digital programme booklet can be found here https://royalballetschool.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Digital-Summer-Performance-Royal-Opera-House-10-July.pdf This also (page 15) gives a list of contracts for this years graduates, scattered across the world. Four ladies from the school join the RB Aud Jebsen programme. At one point it was announced that last years Aud Jebsen dancers would appear, as they had missed their graduation performance last year, but this didn't happen. It had also been announced that the performance would be upper school only, but they were able to include an appearance from White Lodge Year 11. A packed programme, over three hours in total, including a complete performance of Elite Syncopations. The Defile was a mix of virtual (screened) appearances from White Lodge mixed with the Upper School in person, ingeniously done.
  23. Just saw that The Royal Ballet School have launched their Online Summer Intensive again and they are now also offering Adult sessions. Cant wait! Here is the link to all the info if you are interested. Sounds amazing! https://royalballetschool.org.uk/train/dancer-training/intensive-courses/online-summer-intensive/
  24. Hi, I have a spare ticket for this Saturday's (26June) Royal Ballet School Year 3 students performance in the Linbury, Upper Circle A-27, £15. You'll be sitting next to me, I'm fully vaccinated and past the 2 week mark, regularly take the lateral flow tests. Thanks, Silke Programme according to ROH website: "The School's third and graduating year will perform extracts from Ben Stevenson's award-winning Three Preludes and Carlos Acosta's Don Quixote. A new work, created on these students by Ashley Page gives them an opportunity to perform classical pas de deux with a contemporary twist. To finish, students will perform MacMillan's joyful and ever-popular Elite Syncopations with music by Scott Joplin."

    RBS

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some information regarding applying at RBS. It states on the website you pay relevant fee when applying, but I cannot see how much this is? Maybe I’m looking in the wrong section, but could anyone enlighten me to the cost. TIA
