  1. Does anyone know what weighting certain institutions put on personal statements or is it all pretty much determined by auditions? Also,i'm assuming everyone gets professional pics taken for applications? Thanks!
  2. Hello all Just a quick bit of info for all those deliberations and discussions and those yet to deliberate about professional photos for intensives etc Below is a screw grab from Emma Northmore and RBS guidelines for photos. Personally We have never used professional photos, just camera phone in our lounge, one year school hall with help from dance teacher. My child has been successful for every intensive they have applied for from Y6 now Y10. It really isn’t about the photo. And some of the photos we have submitted have been horrendous 😁
  3. Hi, I wonder if I can have some of your pearls of wisdom please as all new to this! Have checked previous posts but can't find any information - maybe looking in the wrong place. When taking photos for 16+ applications, should we get them done professionally or do them ourselves? If professionally, do you have any photographer recommendations please who has experience of taking vocational photos, preferably around London and the South of England. I am sure our teacher will help but I know she is always so busy and obviously want the best photos possible. Your experience/ advice appreciated.
  4. Evening all, my DD has asked for a professional photoshoot for her birthday. She loves (as do I) the work of Jon Applegate and he seems to be the photographer of choice for the dancers she follows on social media. I just wondered if any of you have done something similar and could give an idea of costs? I see on Jon’s website there is a sitting fee but no indication of the cost of the images which I assume aren’t included. Any info would be appreciated as would recommendations of other photographers you would recommend. We’re in Tyneside but willing to travel. Thank you in advance
  5. It's nearly that time again!? 😱😭 i was wondering if it is acceptable to ask your Associate teacher to take the audition photos? I adore my ballet teacher, but I feel like the photos do not picture me in the best light, my legs and body always look a little short and chunky, my legs look a little bent and my turnout bad! I once shot some with my mum who got frustrated by the amount of time it took to take one single picture, but looked better. But the only suitable room we have at home is carpet-ed... Is that a no-no? Looking at the pictures taken by the Associate teacher, they all look beautiful! i don't want to be rude or upset anybody though!
  6. "Using ingenious choreography to interact with their digital environment, seven performers tumble down waterfalls, dive through waves and freeze on glaciers in a thrilling blend of film and live performance which explores our relationship with water." 8. How do you take a good photo of a dancer doing developpe a la seconde?? I assumed the position had to be ‘held’, and given my photography skills the hold is often for quite a few seconds! However, now thinking that a well-timed 'action shot’ would look a lot better! Is that cheating?? Dd can developpe quite high, but can’t hold it there for very long. Also, to smile or not to smile? Any other photo tips gratefully received too! I’ve just learnt that taking the photos from a seated position makes them look better. I am a novice running out of practise time to get it right!
  9. Just a quick question, I've printed out the photo requirements for Hammond (yr9) are all positions in tights and shoes except tendu in enface positions both sides which is says bare feet or are all photos bare feet, I'm confused!
  10. Quick question. I can't see anywhere on the Tring application for lower school where it says if the DC should have bare legs and feet or tights and shoes for the photos. Can anyone help? Thanks!
  11. Hope someone can help!! There seems to be two different sets of photos required for the audition application: One here (which the application sends you to) http://www.royalballetschool.org.uk/training/auditions/photograph-requirements-full-time/ and one on the second page fo the form - not sure the link will work and cant post a photo (easy to get to by putting in name and dob tho) http://www.royalballetschool.org.uk/training/auditions/junior-associate-audition-application-form/#gf_59 really confused!! x

  13. Nobody seems to have mentioned this book and so I thought I'd start a new thread for comment and thoughts - its very rare for RB to document a bill in this way. Do post up your thoughts on the book and the idea behind it in this thread. I do though have another reason to post - I'm really pleased to say that six of Dave Morgan's pictures are in the book and feel so pleased for him. Huge congrats Dave and we look forward to seeing more in books! Christopher Wheeldon and Alastair Marriott’s Trespass with Yasmine Nagdhi and Melissa Hamilton. © Dave Morgan. Courtesy of DanceTabs / Flickr I'm inlcuding two of the six pictures in this post but you can see them all, and in versions that zoom up to very large size, on the following link (along with full details of the book itself): Book - Titian Metamorphosis - Art, Music, Dance.
