Matthew Bourne's New Adventures have announced they are re staging Edward Scissorhands later this year. Tickets go on sale for Sadlers tomorrow (Friday 14 March) and also for Nottingham in January 2015. I assume it will tour the country.

Watching " Mayerling" wasn't the only aim for my visit to England. I adore Matthew Bourne's works since I saw " The car man" in Sadler's Wells theater and try to see them whenever it's possible. Actually I was surprised not finding any reviews her of his last creation " The midnight bell" which I was lucky to see in Brighton last year. Well, however, seeing that his company would perform " The Sleeping Beauty" in Plymouth precisely during the days I'm in Britain, I didn't hesitate to buy the tickets. And only afterwards I looked at the map to see where exactly is Plymouth located. Well, I found out that my knowledge of geography has faded substantially since I'd finished the school, but done is done and the only thing we could do was to find the less expensive bus/train tickets from London to go to this beautiful coastal city worth of visiting even without Matthew Bourne's company. Well, we weren't dissapointed. Matthew Bourne combines the classical dance with modern movements and interesting twists of the plot like no one else. We were lucky to have Ashley Shaw as princess Aurora, Andrew Monaghan as Leo, the royal gamekeeper, Paris Fitzpatrick as Carabosse and Caradoc, and Dominic North as Count Lilac, the king of the fairies, and they and the rest of the dancers indeed made the evening unforgettable. Even though I got somewhat confused about the vampire/Dracula scenes in the performance, but I suppose, that's why it's called "A Gothic romance". It was the first performance of the 2022 remount but it didn't look like one, everybody was acting and dancing with a great precision and joy, so easily, and effortlessly, that we couldn't but enjoy every moment of this wonderful evening! I caught myself on the thought that the next time I probably won't bother again to look where is the town the New Adventures perform - I'll surely just buy the tickets again first!

Matthew Bourne's Sleeping Beauty arrived at the Lowry tonight after its world premiere in Plymouth last week. It is described as a Gothic Romance and Lez Brotherston's sets and costumes are lavishly gothic and utterly fabulous and really set the scene. Our Sleeping Beauty is born in 1890 (the prologue) and comes of age (and is sent to sleep ) in 1911. The reawakening takes place in 2011. I don't want to ruin everyone's voyage of discovery by disclosing that "the butler did it" but I will say that the opening scenes with the baby Aurora are just brilliant. There are six fairies - 3 men and 3 women. Lilac is Count Lilac. Carabosse is only in the prologue and the dark fairy role is then taken over by her son Caradoc (played by the same dancer). I just LOVED the fairy costumes. The solos for the six fairies gave a tantalising hint of the Petipa choreography we all know and love - especially the 5th and 6th variations. There isn't a rose adagio but there is a lovely duet for Aurora and a gardener to that music. The "pricking of the thumb" is achieved by a rose, which makes perfect sense. There are several twists to the standard story which I won't reveal except to say that it all ends happily! Matthew Bourne certainly knows how to put a show together and on first viewing this has become one of my favourites! It has similarly sly references to royalty as those contained in Swan Lake and there are some fun scenes at Aurora's party (which takes the form of a garden party with tennis). I felt a degree of sympathy with Caradoc which I do not usually feel for Carabosse in more conventional productions. Tonight we saw Hannah Vassallo as Aurora, Dominic North as Leo, Chrisopher Marney as Count Lilac and Ben Bunce as Carabosse/Caradoc. Both Ben Bunce and Christopher Marney had enormous stage presence and really seemed to be manipulating the action. Hannah Vassallo and Dominic North were sublime in their roles. What more can I say - I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!

I went to the opening night in Plymouth. This show ticked all of the boxes for me. The music is amazing, full of emotion and drama. I can't put into words how good it is. I saw it last night as well and it is just so moving. The interpretation of the story has taken well to stage. It is humorous, full of passion, love , drive , highs, lows, tragedy. The dancing is fantastic. For me it is a 10/10. This show is going to get better and better. Congratulations to all involved with New Adventures. I wish you luck with your tour. Well done x

Has anyone been to see MB Cinderella? I have just had an email that it is touring at my local theatre and tickets went on sale yesterday for it. I would love to see a MB, but wondering if it will be OK for my nearly 10 year old, as I know some of his ballets are a little on the darker side (my husband refuses to go to the ballet with me!!!!)

I saw the final performance at The Lowry last night of Matthew Bourne's Sleeping Beauty - re-imagined. I loved it! I had seen it a few years ago at the Liverpool Empire but the audience was a terrible distraction throughout so I remembered nothing except the baby! Last night was so much better and a quiet audience. The sets and costumes were fabulous and I especially enjoyed the first half. I felt I lost the story every so slightly in the second half, don't know if that was just me. Anyone who has watched a lot of Matthew Bourne's work will have easily recognised similarities to Swan Lake in the dances moves. I particularly liked the Red Ballroom scene as I call it - the costumes were gorgeous. In the first half the fairies were great and again they had magnificent costumes. The dance employed 2 moving conveyor belts which the dancers were able to stand and move on - these were at the rear of the stage and were used to great effect I felt. I really enjoyed the scenes with the baby which were staged marionette style - very clever. Leo (the Prince) was danced by Dominic North and Aurora by Cordelia Braithwaite . Adam Maskell played Carbosse/Caradoc - and very sinister he was too! Count Lilac was Liam Mower. For anyone considering going to the Sadlers Wells run or any other I would highly recommend it as a great night out - and not too late the show finished at 9.40pm. Would love to hear any other reviews as mine is not very exhaustive, but I wanted to flag up what a great show this is! Just read on BBC website that he's going to adapt a classic British film about a ballet company:- 'He also revealed he is currently adapting a classic film for the stage - but would not reveal which one. "I've got a world premiere next year for my company," he said. "It's based on a famous British film about dance, about a ballet company. Lord of the Flies opened at the Lowry on Wednesday evening. I saw the performances that night and on Saturday afternoon. It is a wonderful initiative that was started in conjuction with Glasgow city council in 2011 to involve young boys/youths in a dance project. It must be so fulfilling for the boys who took part and if it inspires even one of them to go further with dance then that is a huge achievement in itself. I'm not going to try and describe the performance in detail because Sarah Crompton has done a wonderful job of that in her review in The Telegraph. I had read the book as a teenager and had found it very disturbing with its graphic description of how boys stranded on a desert island try to maintain some sort of order but then gradually descend into chaos and savagery as they try to survive. I must say that I found the production disturbing so Matthew Bourne and Scott Ambler have definitely reflected the book accurately. It is a testament to all the participants that it is so very compelling to watch. I certainly noticed more on Saturday afternoon than I had on the first night and admired very much the performances of all concerned. I totally agree with Ms Crompton that by the end you could not distinguish between the pro dancers and the youngsters involved - in fact in my case it was certainly within the first act that the boundaries disappeared. On Saturday afternoon, after several performances, this was even more the case. It is a dark story darkly and compellingly told.

At the time there was a lot of coverage in the dance press of Swan Lake's centenary including some wonderful articles on the histroy of Swan Lake by Giannandrea Poesio. When I saw this Swan Lake for that first time, because I had been reading so much about Swan Lake, it occurred to me that, to me, the structure is very conventional! I still believe that so many years down the line. I would love to hear what other people think about this. The other thing that struck me was how much sense it made to have male swans. I love watching water birds and, beautiful and graceful though they are, I always feel that swans because of their strength (and potential aggressiveness) are masculine birds. I am really looking forward to seeing the production at The Lowry in a couple of weeks. Please do join in the conversation!
