  2. Hello, A newbie’s question so probably was discussed before but I’m just wondering if anyone could recommend a good studio for contemporary or jazz for younger children? Most schools I’ve googled offer contemporary classes starting from 11yo, my daughter has just turned 9. She’s been doing only classical ballet and rhythmic gymnastics and occasionally street dance with Pineapple, but is now really interested in contemporary and jazz. I know Sylvia Young for jazz but maybe some other studios offer a good rigorous training? Ideally central to north London but would go further for a good one. Thanks!
  3. Hi everyone! My DD has just completed The London Ballet Company summer intensive for the second year now, and has been reaccepted as TLBC Associate from September as well so just wanted to give a huge shout out to the Director, Sophie and her team who have just been amazing! The Associates run once a month on Sundays in Battersea and it’s an excellent addition to existing ballet training to get the creative juices flowing and for anyone who is interested in contemporary ballet. Another one of their amazing features is YoBallet which focusses on strengthening the core and using all the right muscles. They also have a school in Wimbledon that is worth checking out (although we don’t currently attend as it quite a distance for us) but what’s different about them is that they don’t follow any strict syllabus and work by strengthening and stretching the right muscles and correcting posture to get the best results. Just had to post as it’s been a little secret of my DD for a while now and she comes out beaming after every session :) The facilities are of an excellent standard too and since I ran a search and couldn’t find any posts on them so I thought I’d get the word out there.
  4. So I’m 18 and for jazz, contemporary etc (basically all dance styles apart from ballet) I have always worn a leotard with my black footless tights over it. On my vocational course my uniform for these lessons has the tights on the top, so I’m convinced I’m right. My 12 sister, (and also my mum, and rest of the family) insist that all tights should be worn underneath leotards. I dont know, if it’s just the age difference or what, but I would interested to know everyone’s opinions on this to settle the debate of me vs the rest of my family thanks

  7. Hi This is my first time here so I don’t know if i posted it to the right place. I have a solo to the song called blackbird by Sarah McLachlan and it is a very simple but nice dance that I have perfected it technically and want to add an emotional element to the dance. I can’t find a story or meaning and I am struggling to put in motion and at the moment I am just doing a slight smile. Do you give any suggestions for Story I can base it to. Thankyou so much link to song: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=g3VrggQW7tk

  9. Hi all. My DD is auditioning this year for entry to a BA in contemporary dance. I always keep an eye on this forum and it has been very informative for me and for her. I was wondering though does anyone know of any forums where they discuss contemporary dance as I know this one is mainly for ballet? She will be auditioning for Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds, and Fontys and Codarts in the Netherlands. All advice or knowledge gratefully accepted! And good luck to all setting off on this rollercoaster year! I am terrified myself!

  11. Hi all, All my ballet kit is sorted for my Moorland Associates programme from September, but also on the list it asks for Contemporary tights, Character/Spanish skirt and Character/Spanish shoes. I wondered whether any of you experienced, lovely people had any recommendations for brands, style and such like? How does sizing work? And for the shoes, is it best to have low or high heel? For ballet shoes I wear size 2, for outdoor shoes I wear 2.5 and for tap shoes I wear size 3, so what size would character shoes be? My parents would like to allow me as much growing room as possible as they cost quite a bit, but obviously buying too big would be uneconomical too. thank you in advance, Love ArucariaBallerina
  12. NG Dance have put on some extra sessions in Nottingham to accommodate children who were still in school last week. You can book online for the whole day or turn up to do mornings, afternoons or whole day. If you're from outside Nottingham I recommend doing the Toton park tram park and ride to avoid the commuter traffic. The Lace Market tram stop is 5 minutes away. My daughter hasn't attended before but I've chatted to the teachers via Facebook over the last few months and they are lovely. I'll be taking my 10 year old and her friend but it's open to age 7-18 http://www.ngdance.org/-sessions-/
  13. Does anyone have a DD or DS applying for contemporary degree courses at 18?would find it very helpful to compare notes. Or anyone who has been through this recently? Looking to apply to schools such as Laban, London Studio Centre, London and Northern Contemporary. Thanks.

  20. Drew McConie's Jeckyll and Hyde received a rapturous standing ovation on Thursday night 26 th May, to my delight as I thought it well deserved. Having read the Telegraph critic's 2* review I had lower expectations than I'd formerly hoped for, however I now wonder if he and I saw the same show ! From the outset the performance grabbed me, and it's a heady mix of quirky fun and melodrama , with superb dancers headed by Dan Collins in the lead as Dr Jeckyll . For the full casting and description see the Old Vic website www.oldvictheatre.com McConie's choreographic style is full of energy and verve , at times witty and delicate , but then POW the heavy rock thunders in and the mood and choreography changes to represent the dark depths of Hyde's psychopathic depravity. The rotating set conjures up multiple locations ; a gym, a florist shop, a lab etc and this was incredibly effective as was the lighting and original live music. A word of warning that strobe lighting is used particularly in act 2. It's used sparingly and well , mainly during the scenes where Hyde takes over Jeckyll's mind . For contemporary dance fans and those who love a darn good yarn , go see asap as there is only a v short run. But a show of this quality will hopefully tour ? Well done Drew !
  21. We've had a lot of interest in our Summer School this year, but many people are not available on the dates that we intend to run it. It seems there's a demand for something later in the holidays, so we're considering moving it to either the week of 15th August or the 22nd August. If you would be interested in attending and are available on either of those weeks, then please comment below or get in touch via our website www.catalystdance.co.uk. You can also find out more on our facebook page; Catalyst Dance. Aimed at dancers aged 9 and over, our Summer Session at Broomwood School, SW12, includes classes and workshops in classical ballet, contemporary and jazz dance. Working with our experienced faculty, students will gain a greater insight into these dance forms, including a taste of what to expect when auditioning and performing professionally. Whilst being extremely hard work, and sometimes challenging, our workshops have a friendly and supportive atmosphere. We have over 20 years' experience of training young dancers at both a pre-vocational and vocational level, and understand that an all round approach to a dance student's well being is essential. All our teachers are returning this year along with some more fantastic names: Sam Archer (Contemporary). Sam was chosen by Matthew Bourne to play the title role of Edward Scissorhands, and has worked extensively with his New Adventures company as well as choreographing his own work. Helen Rymer (Jazz Dance). Helen was associate choreographer on Elf the Musical this year in the West End and has numerous other West End and theatre credits to her name, including White Christmas. Andrew Wilson (Ballet). Andrew is Head of Ballet Department at Bird College and was a Principal dancer with Birmingham Royal Ballet. Lucie Pankhurst (Contemporary). Lucie has an extraordinary amount of TV, film, live performance and theatre credits as a choreographer including Horrible Histories, Bad Education (Channel 4) and The National Theatre. Steph Elstob (Ballet). Steph trained at Central School of Ballet and has appeared with Matthew Bourne's New Adventures, Michael Clark Company and has performed at Buckingham Palace with ROH. Nicky Griffiths (Jazz Dance). Nicky trained at Bird College and is currently playing the role of Lorraine in Jersey Boys at the Piccadilly Theatre.
