Nouvelle Histoire de la danse en Occident: De la Préhistoire à nos jours (New history of dance in the West: from prehistory to today) edited by Laura Cappelle is now available as an ebook (in French only). Contributors include Geraldine Morris, Erik Aschengreen, Adeline Chevrier-Bosseau, Elizabeth Claire, Laure Guilbert, Alastair Macaulay, Sarah Woodcock and Tim Scholl. As many of you are probably aware, Allegra Kent's new book releases in a few days. I had the opportunity to interview Robin Preiss Glasser, the illustrator for Grand Jeté and Me, who you may know from either her career at Pennsylvania Ballet or Fancy Nancy fame. I find her story to be quite interesting, a testament to many professional dancers who go on to have successful careers beyond the stage. ‘Shadow Aspect… my journey of expression’ is a new book written by Mara Galeazzi, former principal ballerina of The Royal Ballet. ‘ Italian ballerina Lady Mara Galeazzi OMRI, a former principal dancer with The Royal Ballet, graced the world’s stage over 3,000 times during her career. In her memoir Shadow Aspect, Mara collaborated with photographer Jason Ashwood to provide the first insight into her life behind the stage as a freelance dancer and reveals how struggles with childhood depression, anxiety, and illness drives her world-renowned stage presence. Centred around her performance in Tim Podesta’s ballet Shadow Aspect, Mara reflects upon the shadows of her childhood and later life. Gavin Larsen is a first-time author who has just published a memoir about - as the title so precisely expresses - Being a Ballerina: The Power and Perfection of a Dancing Life. I highly recommend this book for aspiring dancers who wish to have insight into the industry, as well as current or retired professionals who will find so much detail, emotion, and experience that they can relate to. As the author herself suggests, although the stories are (obviously) about ballet, anyone who is passionate about something in particular will be able to see themselves in her writing. Larsen is an excellent storyteller - in fact, you may have already read her in Pointe or Dance Teacher, publications for which she is a contributor. Sort of related to the probable impact of coronavirus (but I don't want to add this to the existing thread) on class availability. What book and DVD recommendations do we have to encourage practice at home?

Hello! Thanks for accepting me to this forum. ☺️ I am not a ballet-dancer and don't have any experience(except basic stuff regarding some performances and styles) however I'm writing a book where the protagonist is a passionate ballet dancer and the reason I signed in this forum is the fact that I'm doing some research on ballet in order to make what's in the book seem realistic. I'd like to know beforehand whether my questions can be answered or if this is strictly a forum for ballet-dancers. (Note: Even if ballet is important in the story, it's barely involved in the main plotline but only in the past of the character and some goals he/she had made. I also don't want to spoil what happens so I might not answer some kind of questions. Most of them are related to ballet styles and ballet education, not about individual performance or technique.)
