  1. Hi Girls I’m back I’m setting up this thread up for everyone concerned with adult ballet, all are welcome, dancers, teachers, physio’s everyone. I claim no ownership to it what so ever, however I will continue to report about my journey on it, I hope others will too. Leaving “the Going back to ballet” thread left me extremely sad, especially as its almost like a record of my growing up in ballet right back to page 2, from my first leotard and how self conscious I felt, to my first bun, and of course my first show. I wont dwell on the hostility shown to me as its no where to go. The change of heart is simple, I’m on my second wind now, Last week I was extremely tired, not just from the Northern Ballet trip but the fact I was given a document to review for Wednesday morning board of trustees meeting, this arrived by email at 5pm Monday night just before my Lincoln ballet class, I printed it off later when I go back (after 10pm). I review it Tuesday using both train journeys between Peterborough and Leeds (Northern Ballet). Wednesday morning I hardly slept as I was freighted of oversleeping as I had to be away from home by 9am. Thankfully at the meeting I had two coffee jugs in front of me, at least the caffeine kept me awake. When we came to the document in question, it turned out I was the only one that had reviewed it with all my post-it corrections stuck all over it, needless to say I was furious. At the end of that week it didn’t take much for me to throw the towel in. That was then, now is now, time to leave that behind. Update from City academy, as these details are largely embedded in the Giselle thread but are not relevant to Giselle, I have posted them here: The Masterclass is a day where participants will experiment the full workout that a ballet dancer has to endure to be able to enhance their technique and performance. It will be divided in three sections: 1) Body conditioning for dancers (floor exercise) Focusing on line, strength, flexibility, core stability, and some ballet exercises on the floor. 2) Completed ballet class (barre, centre, diagonal) This include; adage, pirouettes, petit allegro, grand allegro 3) Choreographic work. The teacher will create a small classical ballet piece which we can be performed by the end of the master class. Don Quixote will not be taught now, as repertoire will be offer during the specific repertoire workshops. In Swan Lake, they plan to do the Waltz of the Swans, Odette's solo and Pas de Quatre (Cygnet Dance). If they do have a male participant the schedule may change to Odette and Prince Siegfried 1st encounter scene, Odette's solo and coda with Corps de ballet. I don’t know what other male dancers are likely to join this class, other than Tony, one of my friends from ENB, I will check with him on Tuesday. LinMM if you see this, I’m not sure if you are doing the Masterclass, I have already booked it, but I have to be away smartish at 6pm as I am due at the Lanterns Theatre, Docklands before 7.30pm. All the tickets are booked for my 500mile round trip between 5 ballet classes, the logistics are a bit tight, it will have to be a meal on the train I guess. I wont be posting back possibly late Wednesday night or even Thursday as I need to get a good deal of sleep in for prep on this one.
  2. I can see from other threads I am not the only adult who is doing (or has done) RAD Intermediate Foundation, and I thought I would start a new thread for sharing experiences, past and present. I started studying the syllabus in the autumn term 2015. Having started with one Inter Foundation class, I am doing two classes each week at RAD HQ and having a private lesson with my local teacher. I had hoped to be able to do the exam in this summer, but my teachers don’t think I am quite ready. I am really hoping for the November/December exam, but it does mean keeping everything up over the school summer holiday. Pirouettes and allegro are my main problem areas (and also not looking tense!) Pointe work in the centre also needs work.
  3. Hello, I’d like to ask for thoughts and opinions on the gap between the RAD Vocational exams as I need to decide which to go for. I returned to ballet as an adult and have been dancing again for 3 years. I am preparing to take the RAD IF exam in March. Unfortunately I need to move for work. I’ll have moved house by next Friday. I won’t be able to continue my current classes due to distance. I have managed to find a couple of schools in my new location. School A won’t be able to put me in for the IF exam until much later in the year. School B only do Intermediate and Advanced (1&2). They do neither IF nor AF. I’m leaning towards School B who have a very good reputation. Although it would mean well over a year until I can take the Intermediate exam, I do prefer to feel that I’m progressing forward. I hesitate a little because whilst I’m confident in my ability at IF level in general, my pointe work is weaker. I am at a beginner pointe level. How big is the jump in pointe work from IF to Intermediate? Also what does the overall jump from Intermediate to Advanced feel like? Has anyone else done that and regretted not taking Adv Foundation first? If some schools choose not to do the foundation grades are they not really needed to progress with good technique? Thanks for reading ☺️
  4. Is anyone able to recommend ballet classes in or near Cardiff for an adult who had previously done ballet lessons but has had a few years off and looking to take it up again? Not expecting to be able to pick up where I left off straight away but would like to work up to an advanced level. One that offers other dances styles such as jazz or tap would be a bonus, but ballet is my priority.

    Hello

Thanks for accepting me to the forum. I'm currently attending class(es) but am still pretty much an absolute beginner. I am a late forties male.

    Adult Ballet

Hi there! I feel a bit awkward posting this but I just can't really seem to get many answers about this on my own...especially since the whole COVID situation there aren't any studios open haha. Basically, I am 19 years old soon to be 20 and I want to get back into ballet. I was in it for 2 years as a young child but couldn't continue. I just wanted to know if it's possible for adults to train for pointe, and what are the oppourtunities for adult ballerinas. I know that I'll never be professional or anything but I would love to do it to perform if I get good enough. I can take as much help and advice as possible 😅
  7. Hello! I'm very out of date on London's drop-in class scene. Does anyone know of classes vaguely near King's Cross? I went to Central School in the previous location (various teachers but mainly Renato), Urdang and Pineapple (mainly that lovely and sharp lady with short red hair, goodness it's been ages, I'm not sure she's there any more) back in the day. Looking for something drop-in, North of the river, and with a focus on technique/conditioning right now. Oh, and definitely not live-streamed! What's good these days? I've never done Place classes, any thoughts on those? Happy New Year!
  8. I am wanting to return to Ballet - I am 33, but struggling to find adult classes in Manchester that aren't just sort of 'ballet fitness' classes. I passed grade 4 when I was younger, so it has been a long time, but I would love to train properly again & take exams. How have others managed to do this as an adult? Also does anyone happen to know any good classes around Manchester/Cheshire end? (Not city centre as that will be way too difficult to get to after work). Any advice appreciated as I am feeling rather lost with it all! Thank you
  9. I just wish there is performance workshop for adult with the opportunity to perform at the end. is there anything like this out there?
  10. Does anyone know of any good adult ballet classes in the Liverpool area? I miss dancing so much since I moved north.
  11. Hello all, I’m having an issue just now where I am trying to order leotards/dance underwear/general dancewear... it seems UK size 12 is ‘large’ and 14 is rarely available as ‘xl’. Are bigger/adult bodies really all that rare in dance classes and dance exams these days? Surely we’ve come so far in pushing for equality. So where is the inclusive dancewear?
  12. Just wondering has anyone taken Hubert Essakow's Sunday class at Central? Any opinions on the level and the teaching? Debating trying this one over David's Beginner Improver+ class but wanted some first hand experiences if anyone would be able to share?
  13. Hello! I’m in the process of preparing for my RAD intermediate foundation exam and I’m hoping to sit it at the end of this year or next year. I’m doing 2 classes a week, a one hour private lesson, 2 hours of weights and tracking my calorie and protein intake on my fitness pal with my online personal trainer. I started ballet a year ago now having never danced before and was wondering if there’s anyone on here preparing for the same exam so we could share experiences and tips. Or any teachers that can share wisdom about how best to prepare, how much to practice, how many classes to take, cross training etc. Looking for some RAD intermediate foundation buddies - I’m nosy about how other people prepare for RAD exams 😂🩰
  14. Looking for options for online Vaganova classes for adults that are live and include corrections. I found Amy Novinski, but not sure what else is out there. The nearest in-person Vaganova classes are over an hour away, over a mountain, and Chechetti zoom classes have been okay but Vaganova just feels like slipping into a well-fitting shoe.
  15. Hi! I’m an adult returning to ballet. I used to wear a Grishko Ulanava I, but would like something with a larger platform for stability as I build strength. I have VERY compressible foot, and low but flexible arch. If the vamp is too wide, I slide down and crush my toes. Any suggestions on a good shoe for me would be appreciated. XO
  16. Hi Everyone! Are there any other adult beginners on here? I’ve been going to ballet class once a week since September having never danced before in my life and am really enjoying it. Just wondering how long it takes to get any good? I’ve got better at the barre work my teacher has been doing in class but I’m still embarrassingly bad, especially when it comes to centre practice. I’m much worse than all the other ladies in the class who have returned to ballet having danced as when they were younger and I’m getting fed up of being the worst one. We are doing rad intermediate syllabus. My teacher is trying her best god bless her, she’s really taking time to explain things but there’s so much to remember and I keep mucking it up. I practice with you tube videos a few times a week in between classes but progress seems so slow. Feeling like I need some moral support or maybe just a stern talking to telling me to stop being such a whiny baby and practice more 😂 Sometimes I actually feel bad for being in the class with all these better dancers, but I’m too stubborn to quit, besides I actually love going to the class despite how rubbish I am 😂. I am really trying to improve as I don’t want to let the rest of the ladies in the class and my teacher down but I’m still sooo bad 😂 Has anyone else on here felt similar as an adult absolute beginner?
  17. I would be a beginner, I’ve never danced before and I’m expecting myself to be quite rubbish to begin with 😆 I’ve had a good look on Google then got chatting to someone from Reddit who happens to live a town away from me in Greater Manchester. I said I looked at Manchester and Oldham and was looking at KNT danceworks and thought it looks quite good but she said it’s rubbish and more like dancing for fun and to get fit. She said she deffo recommends Fuchsia but it’s in Knutsford so it can be hard to get to after work. Then she recommended Fiona’s school of dance in Stockport but she improved a lot more with Fuchsia. I’d like to have some sort of syllabus to follow and barre work, not too bothered about taking an exam but I don’t just want it to be like a fitness class. Just wondering if anyone knows of a good place 🩰
  18. When ENB issued their press release the other week I meant to point out that their BalletActive classes are now available online (paid-for). I'm considering trying them out over the Christmas break, as I have a long patch with no lessons coming up.
  19. Hello all, I wondered if anyone had any experience with the adult classes at the above school? It seems to have great reviews on Google, but despite how small the world of adult ballet is (esp in London), I've never known anyone who has heard of it, let alone danced there, and I've found no real discussions (including on this forum). I'm having to reassess my dance schedule post-reopening & a lot of other moving parts, and the location, pricing and timetable here are almost perfect for me. Whilst I'll look into doing a trial class, it would also be really helpful to have feedback from people who have been attending a while. Many thanks!
  20. Hi everyone, Since returning to class after lockdown I have been struggling a lot with pointe work - I was never brilliant at it but I used to be much better than I am now. Since I have put on a fair amount of weight over the last couple of years, do you think it might be worth trying my usual shoe with a stronger shank? I’ve googled this and there is a lot of mixed information - some say stronger feet need stronger shanks, some say stronger feet need less support and therefore softer shanks etc etc. It’s a bit of a minefield of information! Currently I feel like my best plan is to order a new pair of my usual shoes in the usual strength and also my usual shoe in the stronger shank so that I can work with both and see what helps? (obviously the main thing I need to do is work on my strength to get back to where I was pre-covid!). Any opinions/ideas/advice welcome.
  21. Hi all, I'm looking for some tips from other adult dancers that have gone onto pointe later in life. I got my first pointe shoes last year in my mid forties and am still struggling to do anything away from the barre. In barre exercises I can do most of them just with 2 fingers or even 1 finger sometimes lightly resting on the barre so it isn't that I need the support, I think it is more of a mental block. I'm in class with 13-15 year olds and they seem to throw themselves up there without a second thought, one girl last night was doing her first ever class in them and seemed like she'd been in them forever! I know you do second guess things much more as you get older and don't have the same gusto and fearlessness that you have as a teenager. Have any of the other adult dancers here experienced this and how did you get over it? Thanks

  24. Hello everyone, I’m just wondering what everyone would recommend wearing to adult beginners ballet class? I’ve only started ballet in September and have been going in my gym kit thus far (black leggings, sports bra and sleeveless tank top). This is what everyone at my local class here is Essex is wearing, but I joined an online beginners class at Pineapple and noticed some people are wearing proper ballet clothes. Going forward I don’t want to turn up looking like I’m not taking it seriously enough to kit myself out properly, but at the same time don’t want to be ‘all the gear and no idea’ 😂 Is there a reason why ballet clothes (tights, skirt and leotard) are better than just gym clothes? Is it easier for the teacher to see what we are doing in proper ballet clothes? Or am I good just to stay in my gym kit? Also where is everyone getting their dancewear from? And do ladies wear a bra under the leotards? (tbh I’ve not got much there in chest dept anyway 😭) sorry for so many questions, but if anyone could give me a heads up on all this I’d be extremely grateful 😊
  25. I am an adult dancer in Australia who takes RAD exams with kids at a local studio. Over the past couple years, I have had a number of issues with my studio owner. These relate to timetabling (e.g. not running Advanced 1 despite people wanting to do it, but then running intermediate foundation for only 2 people because one of them is a favourite), issues with the communication (e.g. communicating that RAD exam fees are due within 3 days or you won't be entered for exams, despite fees being in excess of $600AUD last year!), rude/disrespectful comments in email and in front of other students, saying one thing and then, when questioned, completely denying that she ever said that, and most recently, bringing the only advanced foundation class I am able to attend forward one hour so it is impossible for me to leave work on time to be able to attend. There was no consultation on this change and I didn't even get the email telling me about it, another student had to send it on to me. I understand that the schedule has to change for a number of reasons, so I have requested a refund for that class as, due to their actions, I cannot take advantage of the service I am paying for. I have received no response to that email in over a week. My attempts to communicate get completely ignored. In the background to all of this, I also believe that the studio owner has been saying things about me to my jazz/contemporary teacher as the relationship there has deteriorated beyond hope of recovery practically overnight. I am deeply unhappy at this studio and dread going back there to finish out the year. Unfortunately, I absolutely adore my ballet teacher and she is the best teacher in the entire state of Australia that I live in. She keeps completely away from studio drama and wouldn't be impacted by any of the above. I don't want to leave this teacher, but I don't see how I can stay at the studio when I get treated so poorly. I have looked at other studios in my area and they either don't teach ballet above intermediate level, or refuse to allow adults into children's classes. I don't want to move to one of the only places that offers adult open classes as I have found that they are twice as expensive but I don't progress very much. I guess I'm looking for general advice about how to proceed with this situation. I have already decided not to continue with jazz or contemporary classes next year and, if I remain, would only take classes in ballet with the teacher that has been nothing but supportive of me through some very difficult personal times this year. My family wants me to pack up and leave but it would basically mean abandoning dancing at an advanced level and a serious decrease in hours. What would you do?
